:thumbsup2So I've decided to finally lose the weight I've been lugging around for seven years now. I can't afford this year to buy a gym membership so I've decided to invest in a few workout DVDs I can use at home when I get off work. :yay:

No high impact, lift ten times your own bodyweight, boot-camp types. I'm a sedatary marshmallow and need to start off slowly. I like the types that keep you entertained and I need some variety - I won't stick with the same routine day after day. Can you give me some tried and true recommendations?

Also - I'll only have 30 minutes a day to workout so a 60-90 minute a day workout won't work for me.

Thanks everyone!

start slow, why not just try walking for that 30 minutes. That is how my SiL started, she lost a ton of weight. As for workout tapes, can't help you, I have a handful but haven't really picked them up in a while. I used to love TaeBo, I would walk away feeling like I could kick someones behind. I loved that empowered feeling. Try your library. Ours has quite a few and I thought they had a longer than normal rental time. Great way to check it out and make sure it's right before you invest in it.

You want to check collage videos.com They have have hundreds of workouts. I buy all my workout videos from them. You can watch previews on the site and see which ones interest you most. There's a helpful forum as well. I'm trying to save up money to get a step bench so i can start with step aerobics.

Do you have on demand thru your cable company?

I recently discovered that there are a bunch of free exercise videos on the the on demand section under sports and fitness. It's great! Check and see if you have access...mine are all free.

Denise Austin gives a good workout, but she doesn't kill you.

If you are just getting started, I would get the Leslie Sansone videos "Walk Away The Pounds." SHe has many different routines, types of walking workouts and different time limits. They are all pretty good. I must warn you though, if you stick with them, fairly soon, they will not be "enough" of a workout for you. They are great for those that are just getting off the couch, but I don't think they are going to do much for long-term fitness.

I recently started using a highly rated tape by Jillian Michael's--The 30 day Shred. Each workout is about 20 minutes. It is not boxing, or lift 10 times your weight or anything like that but it is definitely intense for about 17 of those 20 minutes. And that's what you need if you are only doing a short workout.

I did do something stupid though, last weekend and sprained my ankle doing the jumping jacks. So I am on the couch for awhile.

I like the New York City Ballet workout. It is more strength and toning than cardio--which was good for me when I was getting started to not feel so wiped out after a workout. You can do the entire workout--or go to segments. When I am short on time I will do the warm up and cool down and either even or odd numbered segments in between. I figure half the work out is better than none and I will do whichever I missed the next time I have to go for half. They don't do anything to make it "fun" but the dancers are nice eye candy;)

the walk away the pounds series is great. Leslie Sansone is the lady who does them...they are super easy, but really work you...some even come with a belt for strength training, or small weighted balls , or a stretchy band. I have about 4 of her DVDs and just love them. They basically use 4 steps and you walk to the beat of the music. It allows you to make it as high or low impact as you want.

I really like Turbo Jam Maximum Results. It is a great cardio workout. Chalene Johnson makes it fun. She will also show you how to do the moves with less "moving", sort of an easier version.
