Hi Gang.............I will try to make this as short and to the point as I can make it.
I have been looking for a job for a little over 6 months now and I haven't found anything with the right hours or the right kind of job. I was looking for a data entry type job. I went to a bunch of staffing and temp service places and one of them had a two receptionist job at a Home Design Studio. To work there was like a dream come true. Before I got sick 2 years ago I was beginning my schooling for Interior Design. So, this was a studio for a Home Building company. They have people there who are called "DESIGN CONSULTANTS" who walk around with people who just purchased a home from this company and are at the design studio to pick out flooring, cabinets, appliances, bathroom fixtures, etc. So, after my few days there I contacted one of the consultants whom I befriended while I was there and asked her what it took to be one. She had no prior experience just a talent for styles and colors and things. That's just the experience I have except that my father is a carpenter and I actually know a good bit about how a house is put together. Anywho, can anyone help me............I WANT TO BE A DESIGN CONSULTANT. What do I do about it? I have called a bunch of places and they don't have anything like that.....I inquired about it at this place I was at but the open position that they had was filled the day I inquired.....bummer.

Let me know if you have any suggestions......I really have no clue. This is new territory but I know I can do this job and I want it so badly...........Thanks gang.......you are wonderful people!!!!

Maybe check with some private local builders in your area? I know when we had our house built, we worked with a woman who went thru every little detail and helped us pick out all of our options. And since we had a custom home, it wasn't simply picking from a few items...she really worked with us. I'm not sure of her actual job title, but that may be similar to what you're looking for? Good luck!

thanks........I will try that.......it's a good suggestion!!!

Many builders have design centers in metro areas where if you are buying one of there homes you go there and they show you samples and you go through and pick everything for the house from the wall colors, carpet, tile, cabinets, counters - all of it. I would check with all of the home builders in your area - maybe if you are having a hard time finding an office you can check at some new neighborhoods and ask the sales consultants. They are almost always really nice people - you have to be a people oriented person to do what they do. I know Pulte, Lennar and KB homes have these centrally located places. Not sure of the training program though - if any.

thanks.........i will try to call all the home builders in my area tomorrow.....i called a bunch today and most didn't know what i was talking about.......but i only called a hand full.........guess the law of large numbers may work for me......thanks for your help......what you described is exactly the job i'm looking for....i just can't imagine taking any other job now.......although i may have to just to pay the bills and just keep looking in my spare time for a design consultant job........thanks again, you are wonderful and so is Minnie824!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is really exciting, to find what it is you know you want to do for your job. Is there a local vocational or technical school where you could take some classes? While you're waiting and to keep the excitement up, could you develop some sort of portfolio, maybe some friends need some help with decorating and you could take before and after photos, or maybe get wallpaper samples and flooring and carpeting samples and put them together on a page. Kind of like what they do on HGTV when the designers are showing potential customers their ideas. Maybe in your portfolio you could do something like a paper called "how to measure a room". Then since you know about measuring and carpentry, you could put some directions down. That would show that you know what you're doing, and have something that you could show to potential customers. I bet if you knocked on some doors and could ask to briefly speak to the manager and show them your portfolio, you would stand out. Then give them a generic business card, maybe something you could print on your computer so they could call you.

You know, I think I got carried away here and I don't even know if I answered your question. :)

Buy anyway, all the best of luck to you and I hope you find your dream job. Here's some pixiedust coming your way. :) :) :)

WOW...........that is a wonderful idea........except for the taking classes part because I am too broke to take classes or else I would be back at school taking my interior design classes. So unfortunetly that part is out. But making the porfolio sounds like a great idea......That might take me a little while to do........so maybe I should try and take one of these clerical jobs for the time being and work on this porfolio and looking for somewhere that is hiring for something like a design consultant but then I can still have a different job.........it just makes it hard to take a different job now after seeing what I could be doing........I had a shot at the one open position at the Pulte Design Studio that I was working for but by that time they had already pegged someone for the position. But to say that I started out my interior design career as a design consultant somewhere would be awesome. Plus it wouldn't be job, it would be fun since it's what i wanna do for a living........and.......the money is much better than anything else I've looked at and they aren't what I want to do at all.

Thanks for all your help gang...........These are really truly wonderful ideas. I guess it's like, I was having a problem finding a permanent job BEFORE I went to Pulte and saw what I want to do.....so......now I have a whole new bowl of confusion on my plate for breakfast, lunch and dinner.........tee hee.
Thanks again!!!!!!!!! Very Much Appreciated!!!!!!!
