Need lens selection help

I just got my 40d camera yesterday and I have a 70-300 sigma lens with it. I am looking for a inexpensive wide lens to use until I can save up and get a nice piece of glass. I was thinking of this lens:

Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4 DG AF Lens for Canon EOS / EF

Anyone use this lens or have any suggestion on what to buy that is under 160.00?

I personally think that anything starting at 28mm is not wide enough on a crop body. It might just come down to personal preference though. Why not consider the kit lens? It is not the greatest, but it is not too bad.
