Need laptop suggestions

One of my sons has a MAC laptop which he spent a large amount of money for but in his line of work it was a good purchase. His brother is now looking for a very basic laptop... mostly just to surf the web and e-mail. Does anyone have a suggestion for a reliable laptop without extra bells and whistles. He is hoping to keep the price under $800.00. Thanks ...

Love my hp! I wouldn't go with Dell, my mom's IT guy at work advised aganist them. I take my computer to school with me and I have a 17 inch so I dont have a good carrying case and it withstands my backpack so hope that helps.

I love my Toshiba Satellite. It is your basic laptop, very easy to use, great screen. It has wireless LAN built in, a DVD burner, good speakers and it has proven to be very durable. It has a 60gb hard drive which is plenty enough for me. You can generally find one like this at Best Buy, or any other store of this type for well under $800.00. I got mine on sale at Best Buy for $499.

I've had my Gateway for a year. In the first 4 months it went back for service
twice. Then in July they had to replace it.
I also only use for basic use with no games or Itunes on it.

I have a Gateway that I love. DH has the same one and my mom has the model before it. No problems at all. We have had ours for 6 months and my mom has had hers for a year.

I don't remember any specs on it, but we added RAM. I use it for the internet, household budgeting, email and some light picture storage. It was $650 on sale at Best Buy this summer.
