DH and I may be passing through NC next week and will possibly (?) be staying in Asheville for a couple of days. I've never been to that part of country, but have heard it is very pretty. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some ideas of "must see" places to go and things to do. How about good restaurants in the area? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

See the Biltmore House, take a drive on the Blue Rige Parkway up toward Mt. Mitchell lots of overlooks and waterfalls, downtown has a lot of markets, shops and museums, Bill Standleys Bluegrass and BBQ is a nice place to eat downtown, also Pedro's Porch in Biltmore(just a mile or so from Biltmore House) has great mexican food.

I agree with everything sandybottom said.Asheville ane the surrounding area is beautiful.Thats why i love living here.
The Grove Pak Inn is another place that is beautiful and they have an awarding winning Spa.I hope this helps and f you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Sandybottom and luvindisneyworld -

Thank you so much for your info. I am so hoping DH and I actually end up in Asheville. I have always heard how beautiful that area is and would love to see it. I had heard about the Biltmore House and can't wait to see it. Thank you so much for the heads up on the other things to see. We love mexican food and will definitely try Pedro's Porch. You guys are lucky to live in such a pretty area. :D

A fantastic film (best that SSB saw this year) called "All the Real Girls" was filmed in Asheville ... looks like a great place to visit. Think that SSB shall be doing so, one day soon.

Some shots on the website:

I am so incredibly thrilled I found this thread!!!! We are having our family reunion this August in Robbinsville, NC at Fontana Village! I am having a TERRIBLE time finding good information about the area, and would LOVE to hear absolutely anything anyone can share with me!

If this helps, here is our plan: Fly to Orlando (obviously gotta sneak that into any east coast trip) for 5 days at US/IOA, then drive to Fontana Village (I know it's 12 hours!!!) for a week. There are 20 of us going to Fontana Village. The 5 families are traveling from Vegas, AZ, PA (x2) and Roanoke, VA. Only 1 person has ever been there before, and that was in the 1980's! The kids will range from 16 to 5 years old (adults from 75 to 38!).

We plan on a girl's day out touring the Biltmore estate, but nothing else is planned. DH isn't travelling with fishing equipment, and is hoping to rent some while there.

PLEASE anything for us to do, places to eat, will there be a Walmart nearby, is the lake clean, anyone been to Fontana Village, what will the weather be like, HELP!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!

Patti

PattiPB - If DH and I end up going to Asheville I'll post about it after. I have made him promise me that we'll tour the Biltmore if we go so I can tell you about that.

luvindisneyworld - the casino idea sounds interesting. I'll have to mention that to him.

SideshowBob - I never heard about that film before but the website looks interesting. I hope it shows around here soon.

Thanks krazyboutWDW! I'll be watching for it!

Sorry, but I don't know anything about Fontana Village. But I'll see what I can find.

Wal-Mart will be easy to find.

Your husband shouldn't have any trouble finding a place to rent fishing equipment.

Lem me know if either of you need any more info. I live just outside of Asheville.

Any day trip suggestions would be appreciated!

We are considering doing a steam train ride in TN---thought the kids would love that. Any info?

Patti

Almost forgot!!!

What kind of weather should be expect? We are used to 110, dry (10% humidity is high here!) heat. Will we need pants and sweatshirts for the evening? Will I need my de-frizzing hair spray!?!?!?

Since we'll be in Orlando for 5 days prior to NC, we will have ponchos and umbrellas, but have no clue about cooler weather clothes!

Thanks again!

Patti

I'll have to see if I can find any info on the train. I have heard that it is lots of fun!

Next week is when you will be here? I don't think you need to worry about clothing for cool weather. It's not hot like you are used to though. The lows should be around 60. The highs should be around 80.

Do you like Billy Graham and his ministries? If so, you could always tour The Cove and his radio station.

My sister graduated from Warren Wilson College. What a pretty part of the country!

I dont think you will have to worry about sweatshirts, maybe a pair of jeans. It can be pretty rainy and very humid sometimes the past few days have been 85 to 90 during the day and then cools down of a night.

Thanks, again!

I lived in NJ for 30 years, but after 7 years in Vegas, I CAN"T STAND humidity anymore!!! LOL!!! When we get off of the plane in Orlando, I actually feel nauseous from the humidity, and the kids are like wet mops!

We are headed for San Fran next week, and that will give us a reminder of what 60 degrees is like! LOL!

I really appreciate all of your insights---it's been VERY hard for me to find info on Asheville/Fontana Village on the web.

Patti

I asked on the Transportation board for any city/town suggestions about 4-5 hours North of Orlando on I-75, for the night we leave US/IOA, headed to Asheville. People suggested Valdosta and Tifton, GA as places to stay. Do you have any other ideas? We'll be leaving Orlando around 6 pm, and want to travel 4 or 5 hours North before stopping for the night.

Thanks again!

Patti

We were just in Asheville two weeks ago while on vacation. We went to the Biltmore Estate (www.biltmore.com) and Chimney Rock Park (www.chimneyrockpark.com). We were in a RV so we stayed at the Asheville East KOA. There is a great website for Asheville info. at : www.exploreasheville.com .
The area is beautiful !!! I told my DH that I would like to move there when we retire !
One word of caution-if you are headed to Chimney Rock Park and/or the Lake Lure area on Rt.64/74A be careful, the roads are very twisty turny and at times narrow ! You won't have a prob. with a car but we won't try it with a RV again !!!

Thanks for the links!

Did you go to slippery rock park? DH thinks that could be fun, too!

Patti

You're very welcome !
No, we did not get a chance to go to Slippery Rock Park-maybe next time ! Did you see the video clip for Slippery Rock Park on the Explore Asheville site ? It does look like Fun !!!
