We are in the first stages of a DL trip. We would like to explore other areas of California and noticed that there was an Amtrack station fairly close by. Have any of you been on the train? I noticed that the train goes to San Diego on the south run and San Luis Obispo on the Northern run.

Any info on the trip including the seats and cars etc etc would be greatly appreciated. :)

We took Amtrak from a conference in San Diego to Anaheim just this past June. Since we got on in San Diego, there was no problem getting seats. I did notice a lot of people searching for seats between SD and Anaheim. I have to say that most of the way was just georgeous. In spots it almost appears that you are on the beach. The train is a double decker and they tell you when you board that the lower level is for elderly and disabled.

I have always wanted to do this but never have. Friends of ours did it and said it was a beautiful ride along the coast. Last time I checked it was approx 50 bucks for adults. If you go to the amtrak website you should be able to find out for sure.

The trip from San Diego to Anaheim was $24.00 one way for 16 years and up. It was $12.00 for those 15 and under. I got lucky, my daughter was only 15.

If you have the time to really look at the Amtrak website, you can find quite a bit of info.

If you have AAA, and book a bit early, you can get 10% off, by the way.

I checked out the website but was still wondering if the seats are first come first served or can you book in advance?

If you book a trip it will say "Unreserved seat", i.e. first come first served, or you can view the Upgrade options, which for this route means a reserved seat. (For long distance routes you can get sleeping rooms.)

The stretch between Ventura and Santa Barbara is mostly along the coast - quite scenic. The Santa Barbara and San Clemente stations are within walking distance of the beach. Also note the connecting bus service on the Amtrak schedule, e.g. a bus that will meet you at the Santa Barbara station and take you to Solvang.

My friend just got back from taking her Girl Scout troop on the train to Disneyland and they had a great time. However, they had some problems with 4 children ages 10-15 who were traveling alone from LA to New Mexico. The 2 youngest boys took some items from the girls' backpacks while they were sleeping at night and a mom woke up and saw them. She told the conductor and the conductor found that the boys had the items and so at the next stop, he turned the four children over to the sheriff. I guess the parents had to drive over and get them and were really mad. There were other problems as well, such as one of the boys touching one of the sleeping girl's thighs and then they kept trying to sit in their seats, etc. Other than that problem, they really enjoyed themselves.

jocotter, that has just convinced me to NEVER take a long train trip without buying a roommette. Not that I had seriously considered it, not with a 3 year old, but I kept thinking "it can't be THAT bad"...

However, that was a east/west train, right? Not the Coast Starlight or the Pacific Surfliner? Just to be clear on which route you're talking about?

OK just figured out that the Pacific Surfliner is what the OP is talking about. :) If these links work, it should go to an informational page. There it states that the two accomodations are Unreserved Coach Seat or Business Class Seats.

It was the route that goes from LA to New Mexico. My friend's group got on in NM.

Here is the news story from the angry father's perspective. It says the boys were 12 and 13. The boys, according to my friend, took an IPod and a Cell Phone and had them with them when the conductor made them empty their pockets. It was an 18 hour train ride and that seems like a long time to ride with out an adult present.

Taos father upset after his sons, friends removed from Amtrak

TAOS, N.M. -- Four children, ages 12 to 15, were removed from an Amtrak train in the dark, 600 miles from home, after accusations that one of them stole an iPod.

No charges were filed against any of the children, who spent the night at the Kingman, Ariz., police station after Amtrak put them off the train at 2 a.m. Saturday as they returned home from California. Police let the four stay in the conference room until a parent retrieved them.

Zackary Sharfin, 13, and his 12-year-old brother Christopher had traveled with family friends Carley Maestas, 15, and her 13-year-old brother Anthony to visit the Maestas' children's mother in Fresno.

The brothers' father, Peter Sharfin, said the problem likely started when Christopher lost his cell phone and Zackary began looking for it.

A Kingman police report also said Zackary was accused of stealing a cell phone and of touching a child.

Zackary said he was walking through the train, looking for his brother's phone, and bumped into a girl by accident. He also said he found the iPod in the train's game room and was trying to turn it in.

Peter Sharfin accused Amtrak of overreacting and abusing the children.

"I felt like it was child endangerment," he said. "These are children alone at night."

Sharfin said all four children have their own iPods and would not have been stealing.

Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said conductors have the right to remove passengers and that they always call police to pick them up at the next station.

Graham said the conductor removed the kids for disorderly conduct, although she did not have details.

"All I know is that it was disorderly conduct, and that could have been a variety of behaviors," Graham said. "It takes a lot for someone to be removed from a train."

Sharfin said the children didn't know where they were.

"They were hundreds of miles from home," he said. "It was dark. Their parents weren't there."

Graham said the children "weren't just put off in the middle of nowhere, mind you. They were put off in the custody of the police department."

Kingman police Sgt. Rusty Cooper said the children were never alone.

The conductor called the Mojave County sheriff because the alleged theft occurred near Needles, Calif. Sheriff's deputies could not get to the station, so Amtrak called city police, who waited at the closed station with the children for the deputies.

When they didn't show, officers took the four to the police station. Cooper said various officers took care of them there.

The Mojave County Sheriff's Department said there's no criminal case because when the train left the station, it took any complaining parties and witnesses with it.

Sharfin said Amtrak has called several times, but that he does not want to talk to them.

About how long is the trip? Could it be a daytrip from Anaheim? And where in SD is the station? Is there a tram stop there too?

From SD to Anaheim it was about two hours. The Amtrak station was at a trolley stop. Honestly i dont know where it was as i am not familiar with the area. I just took a trolley from the hotel to there. We did pass Old Town.
