Saris are a little tricky to tie but not too bad and just take a LOT of cloth. But if you know someone who sews, sometimes a lot of cloth isn't hard to find - or you can find a closeout bolt at a fabic store. You can YouTube instructions.
Actual sarees are a challenge to fold, pleat and tie(I had to pay the maid to dress me when I went to a wedding this spring in India, lol. I really am not usually that high maintenance!) The good thing, though, is they are just a length of fabric. Ultimate no-sew costume!
I have done them simplified for girl scouts. I used 2 or 3 yards of a bright colored, silky fabric. (Doesn't have to be expensive. I used something that was a dress lining off the discount rack.) Fold (or cut) it so the width = the girl's waist to the floor. Wrap it around her waist a couple times. (Start at right hip, wrap around front to left hip, then around.) Pin at her right hip after wrapping- the excess goes up over her left shoulder. (Can in it up there.) Wear a tshirt/shorts or a leotard under all that.
Wear with sandals and if you have them, some gold/stone jewelry, necklace or bangles. (Something costume from Goodwill, etc.) Draw a bindi between her eyebrows.
