Need Hotel within walking distance

Last trip we stayed at the DL hotel and it actually felt like quite a long walk late at night carrying a tired 3 year old (in the rain) back to the room. Is there a hotel outside that is closer, not gross and safe? The Californian is ok, but a little too hoity-toity (and expensive) for our fun! Thanks.

The Howard Johnson's across the street is nice, clean, and in walking distance. Probably as close as the DLH.

We have stayed at both HOJO and DLH, I would say the distance is about the same. While we enjoyed HOJO, I still missed the DLH.

We had the same problem with the DLH as you. So we are biting the bullet and staying at the hoity toity GCH this time. I think it will be okay though - we loved our stay at the Wilderness Lodge in Florida and it is fairly similar (same architect).

I always thought that if I couldn't afford GCH that a shuttle from an offsite hotel might run me closer to the DL maingate than I was from the DLH, but I never tested the theory.

For a much shorter walk back to your room, I would stay at the Best Western Park Place Inn. It's clean, the closest good neighbor motel, and safe. Keep in mind though that it is a "motel", so don't expect too much other than a clean place to rest your head at night, a small pool and hot tub, and decent sized rooms with a small fridge and microwave. We stayed there last year and it was fine.

I would also consider the Candy Cane Inn because it has it's own private shuttle that runs every half hour. Talk about a great perk so you don't have to walk OR carry a tired child very far! Also I hear they have a pretty decent free continental breakfast.

I second the BWPPI. We just got back from there and it was great. Pleasant staff, clean rooms and the location can't be beat. It took me three minutes to walk from our room to the turn stiles. THe continental Breakfast isn't anything fancy (donuts, bagels, toast, pastries, boiled eggs, cereal)but it filled us up each morning and it opened at 6:30 AM so you had time to eat and get to the turn stiles before opening.

I don't think that the GCH is too fancy. I actually think that the cast members there and people we have encountered have been nice. That being said, we still stay at the DLH because the rooms are bigger and my family always stayed there when I was a kid. Remember also that you get early entry from onsite hotels. I think there might be a few others but I am no help there.

thats what bring your own Stroller is for

well, Sheraton, Marriot all have bus system to transport... you can also consider that!

Just returned from 4 days at Candy Cane Inn...I booked our stay solely on reviews from these forums and Trip Advisor. It was awesome...nice and quiet, even though we were right on the street. Those shutters block a lot of noise. We walked every day, less than 10 minutes easy and helped us walk off those beef stew bread bowls!
James, at the Front Desk, is a helpful fellow and quite nice. The room was immaculately clean and we are two very picky women, believe me! I plan to return with my family later this year.

I just can't get into GCH, I know it's the same architect but it's a totally different style than the Wilderness Lodge. It's too dark and dreary for me...

We stayed at the HOJO last Xmas but DH and 3 year-old DD complained about the distance all the time. It doesn't seem much but if have kids and you take breaks to come back to the hotel and back to the parks it adds up, especially at night after the fireworks when all you want is a hot bath and a bed. For our last minute Halloween trip, we stayed at the Ramada Main Gate(only one available at the time), DH loved that it was so much closer. Although he wants to stay even closer next time.

when you say dark and dreary I think of Animal Kingdom lodge, to me wilderness isn't that way, I hope GC isnt like AKL

Good thought...AKL is the darkest of all 3 & I think GC is much more like WL. I think they may have used a slightly darker wood color for GC than WL, but all in all, very similar IMO.

We stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn one time and it was great. The walk is probably half a mile. (There are two Residence Inns in Anaheim. I'm talking about the "Maingate" one.) We had a stroller for our little one, so it was no big deal.

We love the Residence Inn because they have these two-bedroom family suites and free hot breakfast every morning.
