I've been posting the last couple days on a different thread, I'm starting a new one because I'm getting very nervous and scared and don't know what to do! Since Monday, my ears have been bothering me, they hurt and my hearing is muffled. I went to the dr and they said it's just a cold and irrigated them (they were full of wax).
They're still bothering me today and we fly out tomorrow! Would you still go? The dr. said it's ok, but I may have discomfort, told me to take Claritin D, I'm also going to use Earplanes.
What should I do, please help! I'm really scared! This is only my 2nd time flying which is why I'm so nervous. And I had problems with my ears then and didn't have a cold or anything! Should I still go????? :confused3 My ears are the only thing really bothering me, how bizarre! And why now!!! :guilty:
My DD(7) is the only one going with me. She's been congested but has no ear pain, but the dr. put her on antibiotics just to be safe.
Thanks everyone! :)

I can sympathize with you. Last september I had a bad sinus infection and my ears bothered me so bad to the point where I couldn't hear for a whole day. On the way home from that trip however I drugged myself up on Sudafed PE and everything was fine. Any decongestant will be fine and I am sure Claritin will work wonders. I have never used Earplanes but I hear great things about them as well. Try chewing gum. After finding a hint on these boards I tried forcing air out of my head by doing the following:

Close your mouth and hold your breath. Pinch your nose shut with your fingers and while doing both of these things push air out of your mouth but remember to keep your mouth shout. This may sound silly but it really works. I tried this while taking off and landing and a few times during the flight when I felt my ears starting to hurt. Good Luck, don't let this stop you and have a great time!!!!!!!

Also, take a couple of tylenol and be sure you have water to drink on the plane during take off and landing. I think they're letting you buy bottles of water that you can take on the plane AFTER you get through security now....if not, just ask a flight attendant if you could have a small cup of water to sip on while taking off and landing.

Feel better soon!

You can also try sinus meds. This works - according to a good friend of mine who was career military and flew all of the time. He also had ear trouble, which would make taking off and landing torture. He swore by Sineade (sp?).

I always had ear problems when flying until I started using sudafed and earplanes. They have worked great for years now and I fly monthly for work. You'll be fine, just take the claritin about an hour before take-off, put the earplanes in before they shut the cabin door and don't remove them until you're off the plane. The earplane directions will tell you you can take them out after take-off and put them back in prior to landing. But I had problems the one time I tried that.
