Need help with St. Thomas

We are taking our fifth cruise in November, and for the second time we are going to St. Maarten and St. Thomas (this is not by choice, we'd much prefer the other itin, but c'est la vie). Last year our kids were 6 and 8months, so we decided St. Thomas and St. John would just be too much work for us.

My husband is a bit of a nervous traveller, where I am adventurous and willing to try pretty much anything. I prefer to do our own thing rather than an excursion, so we are more in control of everything. In order to get my husband on board with this, I have to plan everything down to the smallest detail.

I'd love suggestions on an easy few hours either in St. Thomas or St. John. I want to visit the beach, eat in a local restaurant, and do a little exploring. We'll have a lightweight stroller and three bags (probably backpacks), so we'd prefer not to do a lot of in and out of boats, cars, taxis.

Thanks for any advice anyone can offer!

I'd recommend that you skip St John. Its a lot of travel time and you take taxi, ferry, taxi each way. Doesn't sound like you want that much hassle with the little ones.

St Thomas - some ideas:

1. Magen's Bay - get a taxi right when you get off the ship. But you'll be walking some on the beach so a stroller won't be great. Or, you can just sit where you get off the taxi but it gets crowded in that area.

2. Coral World and Coki Point Beach - get a taxi right when you get off the ship. Nice beach.
Both of these are very simple and you don't have to be adventurous to do it. There are plenty of taxis just waiting to take you back to the ship.

3. The tram ride near the port is also a nice idea. You overlook the ships and town. Beautiful!!

PM me if you have any quesions. I've stayed on St Thomas many times and also cruised there a lot. I love the island and may be able to help you.

Diane, thanks. Those were exactly the types of suggestions I needed.

I also forgot that because my husband has an IATA number, we might be able to use the beach and restaurant facilities at one of the local hotels. Do you have a recommendation, by chance?

And while I'm hounding you, can you tell me how to insert a picture? I'd love to post a pic of my cutie pie kids on our Magic trip last year. :-)

Suzanne - HI again! I will be on the magic with you. DH is going to be playing golf in St Thomas, so will be me with my 2 yr old dd by myself. I am going to do the tramway. It looks beautiful. Here is the link for it...

Hope this helps!

Yes, I was just looking at that link and it looks great. I am such a sucker for the beach though. Maybe we'll do both.... How nice of you to "let" your husband golf. My husband will be lucky to have an hour to himself one afternoon. ;-)
