I'm fairly new to the running world and I'm currently trying to train for the half marathon at WDW in January. I'm going to be following the training schedule for the walk/run in John Binghams MFM book and I just purchased the Garmin 305 to help me with this training. It's probably more equipment than I need but I really like the idea of having a heart monitor to sync with my training.

I want to test my new Garmin out tonight when I get home from work and I've been trying to follow the manual to see how I need to set it up. The only thing I have done so far is set up my profile and installed the software on my computer. Other than that, I haven't had a lot of time to read the manual (I just got it last night) and I'm not quite sure how to set it up for what I want to do. I'm planning on going to a local football/track field and I want to set the Garmin to allow me walk 3 miles >beep > run 1 mile > beep > then repeat this sequence six times and record any data I need for my training efforts.

Can someone tell me a quick way on how to accomplish this or am I going about this the wrong way? I plan on reading the manual more carefully this weekend but I'm hoping someone can give me a quick review as to what I need to do tonight just to test this baby out.

I appreciate any help I can get. :thumbsup2 :teeth:

Go into mode, training asst, intervals, dist and then set. Hopedfully, the menus are similar to my 201. I would think so. Doing this from memory, so forgive me if I'm a bit off. SHould be close though.

Thanks for asking the Garmin question. I can't answer, but since you mentioned MfM it leads me to this:

Doesn't the W3/R1 in Bingham refer to time not miles?

Not that you should not be doing your miles if that is your plan and ability. I've changed up my timing/distance W/Rs as I find I am able.

Good catch Lily! I read Bingham, but htought Galloway.

It should be minutes. If it is minutes, pick, time instead of distance after intervals. That's what I used.

If you really are customizing and doing miles insteadm,, though, just ignore this post. ;)

I use the Garmin 305. To program what you want,

push mode to go to the menu screen.

select training, then enter.

select workouts, then enter.

select interval, then enter.

select time/rest time, then enter.

set time.

set rest time.

set intervals.

check the warmup & countdown box (if you have one, it depends on if your software is current).

select done, then enter.

the info screen will now show up. If you selected the warmup & countdown box, hit the start/stop button to begin your warmup.

when you are ready to start your intervals, then hit the lap button
you'll start your run countdown followed by your rest countdown.

Good luck and enjoy,

Chester

Geez, I can't pull a fast one on you guys, can I?!!! :rotfl2:

Yes, I need to do minutes instead. (Walk 3, run 1). I don't know what I was thinking. (Banging on head!) Duh! I've only been doing it this way at the gym for 3 weeks now. :teeth:

I think I can figure it out based on what you all gave me.

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!
