hello all

i have a s2 and its great. after reading some tips about it on this thread i notice that some people have the adapter from ebay and such but they dont say which filter they have with it(brand and such)

so which one is the best if you just want it to protect the lens and have nothing special uv/poliraze dont know which one is best .

also is the lens cap gonna fit with these or do i have to buy a clipping one for it?

tks in advance
nick

A polarizing filter serves the same purpose as polarized glasses. It is used to reduce glare. It should not be kept on all the time. A UV filter can. The more coatings on the filter, the better. This is one of those things where the higher priced ones really are better.

I could not find much help on the canon site (but I am not the best at searching).
At B&H they list specifics and the mention an adapter to 58mm filter size.

58mm is a very popular size so lots of brand are available. WHich also means there are many realy bad products as well.

I mentioned it before but the only thing I do not like about the S2 and S3 is that once the camera is on you can not have the lens cap on.

I have the lensmate adapter and a Hoya u/v filter on my S3 - I leave them on most of the time to protect the lens. I don't know anything about the adapters on ebay but lensmate is recommended very often on the dpreview.com Canon forums.

The lensmate looks like the best option. Not only does it protect the lens but also the exposed zooming barrel. With the 58mm DW will be able to use all the filters (I already have) and get even back in the IR game again!

Exactly, that's why I leave my adapter on all the time. I don't always have the filter on but the adapter stays on permanently.

tks a ton for the help

any perticular lens filter from lensmate that are good just for protection?

is it worth it to get the lens cap if ya cant put in on when your camera is turned on?

get a UV filter for protection. The models on the site are probably not terrible and pro quality filters can be over $100.

The lens cap they are selling is a clip style with a tension button snap. It grips the inside threads to stay on. The stock cap shouild be removed and stored with your original boxes and saved for resale.

Polarizing filter will cut glare off some surfaces, like water. because it cuts some of the light you will have a longer shuuter speed, so it should not be used in all types of photo scenes.

I am ordering the silver 58mm for our S2.

If you want a cheaper IR filter, check out the 88a from H&H Optical Engineers. It runs about $30 shipped, and it's a darling of people all over the net. I have a Hoya R72, and I just ordered the 88a.
