Last year, taking earplugs saved us because everything was sooo loud and without them DS would have been terrified. We bought the kid's silicone kind that you roll up in a ball and place over the ear canal. Unfortunately, they were hard to keep on and kept falling off. What kind of earplugs are the best for little ones? Anyone have any good experiences with a certain type? DS is almost 4. Thanks so much- we're one week out and trying to remember all the little details right now.

Oh no! I'm sorry that your DS kept losing his earplugs! We used the same kind (bright orange silicone) in adult size and had good luck with them. We let our DS (who was 4 at the time) plug his own ears, with our supervision of course! We made the wad big enough that it covered the outside of his ear canal opening with just a tad of it poking in his ear.

I hope you find a solution!

This past trip, we used earplanes. They're a little more expensive, but we never had any trouble with them falling out. (We use the silicone kind at the local movie theatre, etc. They always fall out!)

I'm sure that the adult size silicone would be a better bet than the kid's size and I did see the earplanes at Walmart. But, on the box it didn't say anything at all about keeping out noise just about the pressure on the plane. Do the earplanes keep out noise well? We may just have to try out both.

I'm not sure how well the earplanes worked. Sometimes with my DS I think it's mostly psychological -- it's supposed to keep the noise out, so it does. They were the kid-sized ones, so I didn't try them out. I think if you're interested but unsure, I'd try them out before you leave. (They kind of screw into the ear and have little "handles" sticking out so you can pull them out, but they seem to go in to the ear deeper than the silicone plugs do, so maybe they do take care of the noise. DS -- age5 -- says they do, anyway.)
