My dds 6th grade class goes on a big trip in June into the city to see a show. We were suppossed to get tix for Wicked but someone made a mistake and now group tix for June are sold out. I'm meeting with one of the teachers tomorrow to discuss our other options and wondered if anyone had any recommendations. I'm hoping that we can get Lion King but we need a back up plan. Has anyone seen the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee? I heard it was hilarious but is it child appropriate? Tarzan is not an option-the principal saw it and didn't care for it. Chorus Line is coming back but I saw it so long ago-it's probably not a great choice for 12 year olds, right? Any help would be appreciated. thanks :teeth:

Mary Poppins opens on Broadway in Oct/Nov - can't remember the firm date. It is supposed to be great; darker than the movie, but really enjoyable. You can google it for more info. My girlfriend saw it in London and highly recommended it.

Mary Poppins opens October 16th and the reviews for the London version are TERRIFIC.

Kevin

Hey Kevin, great minds think alike! :thumbsup2 We posted that at the exact same time - weird!

I should have mentioned, A Chorus Line probably isn't totally appropriate for a class of 6th graders...there's that song T & A that the principal might not appreciate LOL!!

Mary Poppins sounds like a good option. I don't think I'd take 12-yo's to see A Chorus Line, but then again, that's probably about how old I was when I saw it.

BEAUTY and the BEAST!!!

I took my DH, two DS' who were 18yo and 21yo and they LOVED it!!!!

A good wholesome show for a school to attend.

Funny, witty, sad, and happy all in one!!!

I saw 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and loved it. However, there is a whole song about a kid and his unfortunate ummmmm..., if you look up the soundtrack somewhere, you will see what I mean. ;)

OP, www.playbill.com

A great sight for all BROADWAY shows. Click on the link and then click on BROADWAY SHOWS on the right hand column and it will give you the ENTIRE LIST. And then you can click on each show and get a description of the show.

The only other one I would suggest besides 1) Lion King (as you mentioned)
2) Beauty and the Beast and 3) HAIRSPRAY (that is a ton of fun and I saw it with my family as well!!!

:thumbsup2

Wow, thanks for the quick responses!! Mary Poppins is sold out already for the group rates and actually the kids were NOT happy when that was suggested, lol. I'm off to check out that site and then to find out what the song in spelling bee is about-I think I can guess, lol! Keep any info coming, I really appreciate it.

Hairspray is fantastic!! I took DD12 this summer - she loved it. It is a little mature - might want to discuss the racial overtones before the trip, but the music and dancing are fantastic!! Oh, a heads up about the mom being played by a man might come in handy, too...

Hairspray!! That's one of the few shows I'd pay to see on Broadway again. A class at my school saw it last year and even the guys loved it.. and I think it's definitely 6th grade appropriate and very entertaining.

25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is an amazing show, but as LoraJ said about the song about the little boy's unfortunate um... probably really isn't right for a 6th grade school trip.

Avenue Q is out because well have you seen these puppets?

Maybe Rent if the kids have seen the movie

Maybe Rent

Actually, I have seen RENT and many times....naaa, not appropriate at all for a school field trip. There is that one seen toward the end of the play where one of the girls (cannot remember which one, Mimi, Joanne, Maureen???)actually pulls her pants down exposing her rear end to ALL!!!!

Basically, I feel RENT is just not a SHOW at all for anyone under the age of 18yo!

They don't moon anyone in the stage version of Rent (I've seen it 2X and will see it a 3rd next month). I don't think I would take 6th graders to it though. There is a lot of singing about sex. It's a great show but maybe not until they are atleast 15 ;)

On Spelling bee, who knows, maybe there are those who are already having unfortunate umms and could relate ;). But you would have to look at the lyrics to know for sure. (I don't know the show so I can't say)

Syrreal: Did you see this ON Broadway? I have seen it 3x as well and every time I have seen that COW song the girl does MOON the audience.

In any event, I still do not think it is a good pick for a 6th grade school field trip.
