DH is taking a speech class and needs to do a persuasive/problem solution speech... for ex: reasons to quit smoking or teen pregnancy......but he does not want to do those topics.

He can't think of a topic....any ideas????

I did a speech on why you need a weather alert radio. I compared it to a fire alarm/smoke detector. :)

How about why/why not you should buy American? Why/why not you should Xmas shop before Thanksgiving? Why/why not you should have an internet filter for your kids?

Just off the top of my head.

I did one on abortion...I did one side, a boy in the class did the other side (not on purpose) and it turned out really cool.

Why IQ tests should/should not be used to place children in schools

Why personality tests such as the MMPI should/should not be used to determine whether or not to hire people

My favorite for right now: Genetic testing for employment yes/no

Ooh another one I like: Profiling to determine who to search at airports

Thanks so much... :D

I was a volunteer FireFighter at the time I took my speech class in college. Everything was related to firefighting. Thank goodness my teacher liked my speeches and didn't get mad or grade me different b/c they all referenced firefighting. I think my persuasive speech I either did "why it is important to pull over for a blue light even though it is not the law" I persuased people the importance of when they see someone with a blue light they need to pull over and gave them many reasons why....could be going to your house or to help someone in need. I gave statics from my fire dept and actual numbers of how many calls we go to a year etc. It was over 8 yeras ago that I gave my speech so I cant remember it all. Or you can persuased people to have several fire extinguishers in their house and how important it is. You can describe the different kinds also, water extinguisher(silver can-used for leaves, papers not on electric), ABC extinguisher (red can-all purpose, can be used on almost everything). If he is interested in something like this I would suggest going to your local fire dept and getting some phamplets that would help think of things for his speech.
Good luck in whatever deciscion is made :):):)

My college persuasive speech was on the importance being an organ donor. It was ok I guess, but my informative speech was voted best in class. Topic you ask? Planning a trip to DisneyWorld! They say you should choose a topic you are interested in, and boy, oh, boy - I am sure interested in WDW!!

I just heard back from my speech professor today! :teeth: She's such a neat person. :) She just had a book published and is working on number two. She wants my opinion on being a non-traditional student returning after many years. She's in for some essay!!! :teeth: Her thank you is a copy of her book! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I have to say I did mine on reasons not to smoke. With my husband dying at 38 from a massive heart attack, I'm convinced his smoking 2 packs a day was a major contributor if not THE reason.

Some great topics here!!!

I did a few of these when I was younger. They were generally on the current news events of the time:

- Pregnant girls should/should not be allowed in the National Honor Society.

- Schools should/should not have the right to do random locker search/drug tests.

- Parents should/should not conduct secretive, home drug tests on their children.

- School censorship of the school paper was/was not necessary to retain order and discipline.

Have your DS look a the paper and pick a topical idea from there - A good one right now may be electoral college vs. popular vote.

Oops! Sorry, I thought this was for your son or kid in school. Maybe some of my ideas still apply for your DH though. Good luck!

LOL, since you mention that..that is what dh did his informative speech on. Of course I helped him alot. We did a powerpoint presentation w/ a bunch of our disney pictures. The prof loved the pics w/ the characters......DH said that everyone loved the speech and was asking so many questions afterwards. His speech wasn't about how to plan a disney vacation but how WDW was set up...with the 4parks, 2 water parks, resorts, dtd, ect...... We had sooooooooooooo much info and visual aid...it was crazy! It was fun setting it up too.

I, too, did a persuasive speech on being an organ donor...and focused on not only signing your license but on informing friends and family. You can find a ton of information/pamphlets. It's a subject that hits very close to home.
