Need help understanding what happens to borrowed points in a cancelled reservation

The wording on the website isn't helping me to understand this process. We have a December use year. So we are currently in our December 2012 use year. We borrowed points from our December 2013 use year for a reservation December 28, 2013-January 3, 2014. I want to cancel this reservation and use those borrowed points for a February Aulani reservation. Is this possible? Thanks in advance.

Did you bank the 2012 points to the 2013 UY to allow you to book in your 2013 UY?
You should not have needed to barrow points from 2013 to book a trip between Dec 2013 till Nov 2014.
Need more clarification of your question before answering.

You really should search out and read the "Understanding Use Year" thread. With a December UY, you did NOT borrow 2013 points for a stay 12/28/13-1/3/14. That stay would be utilizing current points. If you were to cancel it anytime before 31 days out, the points are returned to the UY of the stay, so back to your 2013 points.

The points would be valid for any DVC stay in your 2013 UY, so from 12/1/13 until 11/30/14.

Yeah, that doesn't make much sense.

A stay from 12/28 to 1/3/14 would be UY 2013. You maybe banked 2012 points into 2013? But you wouldn't have borrowed 2013, because that trip IS in your 2013 UY.

Can you clarify?

I think some newer members are confused because they make a reservation in one UY and use the points/plus the stay occurs in the next one. So they think they are borrowing points to make the reservation 11 months before.

You only borrow points if the points you need to use are in a later UY than the UY in which you want to make the reservation.

So if your stay falls in your 2013 UY and you need points from your 2014 UY to make the reservation. And you may have booked it during your 2012 UY.

I guess I'm even more confused than I thought I was. I know we are in extreme borrow mode lately. I think we didn't have any 2012 points so yes, we did borrow 2013 points.

Did you borrow points from your Dec 2013 UY to book a trip that was/is scheduled from Dec 1, 2012 to Nov 30, 2013?

If you only "borrowed" points to book that trip for Dec 28, 2013 -Jan 3, 2014, you must have borrowed points from your Dec 2014 UY (points to be used from Dec 1, 2014 to Nov 30, 2015).

You haven't started your Dec 2013 UY yet. It will start on Dec 1, 2013. You are still currently in your Dec 2012 UY.

Your new res is within your Dec 2013 use year, you should be fine. You actually have until Nov 30 2014 to use the borrowed points.

I am off to cancel the December/January reservation so I can book Grand Californian in the morning for our pre Aulani stay!! The reservation was for a 2 bedroom 2 queens at BCV if anyone wants to try to snag that.

When you borrow, the transaction is final, meaning that the borrowed points stay in that new UY. You can't move them back and you can't bank them.

Whew! In case you didn't realize, you put 2013 in your original post, which is what caused all the questions. People thought maybe you thought you borrowed, but maybe you hadn't really.

But since you borrowed 2014 points and they are in your 2013 year, because of your December UY, that totally works as the previous poster said. And it works because the borrowed points stay in that new UY if the trip they were borrowed for is cancelled.
