Our friends have decided to go on our Sept. Cruise with us and are ready to book. She just pulled up the Disney website and you can book a Cat12 gty for a really great price and when you have the option to choose the room it says it cannot assign it now. Does that mean it will assign it when she books or when we board the ship? They have never been a cruise before and are thinking they would like a window. IF the book and get a cat 12 room can they upgrade when we board?

ALso, is it really true you cannot book a Cat. 2 on a four night b/c they are for the land/sea guest only. We currently have a Cat. 3 and were thinking of changing it to a Cat 2 and share the room with them, but I called and they said they only show availability if we do the land/sea package.

Hi, a guarantee is that they guarantee you a room in that category or higher.... You can be assigned a room at any time, but more than likely later rather than sooner. Chances for an upgrade are always few and far between. Better to book what you are happy with, and if one comes, it comes, but you are not dissapointed! :goodvibes

Even at the port, upgrading is cheaper (when it is available;rarely), but you must be early early, and even then...

Sorry about the last question....No experience on that...

If they really want a window, they should book a room with a window now. It is very difficult to upgrade at the port. I believe that the Disney ships almost always sail full, so there are no rooms left for you to upgrade to.

We had a Cat 12 guarantee and ended up with a Cat 12; upgrade would have been great, but we were happy with what we got. The only way I know of to guarantee an upgrade is if you can find a travel agent that will book you a Cat 12 guarantee for four people, since Cat 12 rooms only hold three people. However, even that guarantee could go to a Cat 11 or 10 and you still wouldn't have a window.

We cruised on the Feb. 17 Wonder and booked a 12 GTY. When our documents arrived we had been upgraded to a cat. 9. It was great having a window! Plus the split bath was great that way 2 people could get ready at once. For our next two cruises we have booked a cat. 9, because now that we have had that room we could never go back. I think Disney does that on purpose! No matter what you decide, you will all have a great time!

:) I personally would rather have an 11 or 12... Getting upgraded to a 9 is obviously nice, but the chances of getting upgraded to a LOUD room is too much for me.. Been there, done that, will NOT do that again.. :)

Then again, if you are lucky enough to get a quiet room.. :teeth:

When we cruised last we booked with Expedia with a cat 12 GTY and when we got our doc papers we were upgraded to a cat 6. We are cruising again on Dec 17, 2005 and booked another 12 GTY. We really don't care what kind of room we get, just put the 4 of us on the ship somewhere, LOL. Our Dec cruise is only costing us $2500 and that is for 7 days and for 2 adults and 2 kids. You can't beat that. Just as long as I have a bed to sleep in at night I am happy. LOL :goodvibes

Thanks for all the great info. I think they are a little more concerned with pricing so if they get upgraded it will just be a little bonus for the price!!!!

Booking a gty does give you the best chance for an upgrade. However, the usual rule of booking a cabin that you will be happy with really applies. There is a huge chance that you will be upgraded from a 12 to an 11 (same cabin, different deck). There is a chance that you will get a further upgrade, but you certainly can't count on it.

By booking a gty, you essentially trade a lower fare for the ability to choose your own cabin. If you won't be happy in a 12, don't book a 12 gty. Same thing--if you MUST have a balcony, don't book a 9 gty and pray for an upgrade.

Upgrades at port are few and far between--don't count on this either.

I think I'm getting it now. So, we've got booked a category 12 GTY for four people. Since category 12's only sleep three, we're basically guaranteed a category 11 then, right? Anything higher, we're just blessed.
