I am taking my DM to NYC Nov. 28 - Dec. 2. I have airfare and hotel (Holiday Inn Herald Square) booked and the Radio City Christmas show tickets for Dec. 1st. That is all I have planned. :guilty: My DGM passed away in May and her birthday is that weekend, so I thought it would be nice to get away. Do I need to have an itinerary like Disney, or can we just play it by ear? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would try to come up with a rough itinerary, NYC has a ton of top notch attractions but it can be a little overwhelming if you don't have any idea of what you want to do or where you want to go.

The subway system is a great way to get around but it is huge and takes some getting used to. Every time I'm in NY I make sure to map my route out before heading to the subway.

I'd ask your DM what she'd like to do. Museums, shopping, historic sights?

I agree... don't plan too much... especially if there is a time zone change after a flight.

I also agree with the subway to get around the traffic congestion. I use Google maps to plan the subway and public transit connections.

I realize I need to give some more details. The main thing we want to do is see all the Christmas displays in the store windows and do some shopping. We would love to see another Broadway show or two, depending on prices. ;)
DM is not big on museums or history.
Some things I would like advice on are:
Visit the Holiday shops at Bryant Park
The Tiffany glass collection at the Queens museum (DM does love stained glass)
Any churches with beautiful stained glass that we can tour
The Top of the Rock vs Empire State building
Tour of Radio City Music Hall
Statue of Liberty
Getting to and from LGA, taxi or car service (probably won't be brave enough to take the subway when we land)

If you know of any great, but affordable, places to eat or other landmarks we might enjoy I would love some advice.

Ellen's Stardust Diner is a fun place to eat. Singing waiters/waitresses - almost like 50's Prime Time setting and food, but singing rather than picking on you. :) Corner of Broadway & 51st Street.

Visit the TKTS in Times Square for Broadway shows up to half price. If you go with the flow and have a few shows in mind, you can get decent tickets for a great price. For same day shows only.

I second this! If you have a flexible schedule you can get a huge price break on Broadway shows.

That weekend will be very busy.

If you want to see a show you may want to get tickets beforehand. I'd guess there will be huge lines at the TKTS booth in time square (though there are more shows added that weekend often).

Download the Hop Stop app. You tell it where you are and where you want to go, if you want more or less walking, and it will tell you how to get there via subway, bus or foot (or combination) and about how long it should take.

I would see about getting top of rock or Empire State Building tickets beforehand (like I said its busy that weekend). Empire State Building is cool cause it's the Empire State Building, but top of the rock is cool because you can see the Empire State Building.

Have fun!

We liked Top of the Rock more then the Empire State Building. Mainly because of no wait for the Rock and 2 plus hours for the Empire Dyste Building.

I would suggest getting the TodayTix app for Broadway shows. They offer similar prices to TKTS, but you don't wait in line, they deliver them to you at the theatre.

Hi there! I am actually from NYC :thumbsup2. As another poster said, hopstop is a great app to help you navigate the subway system, as it can be a bit overwhelming. I would also use hopstop to figure out the approximate cost of a taxi from LGA, there is a tool to do so on there. Thanksgiving weekend will be extremely busy, but it is also a really great time to visit because there is so much going on.

Although TKTS is normally a great resource, that weekend is going to have enormous lines. I would recommend checking out BroadwayBox (just google it) for discount codes to many different Broadway shows. This way you can buy the tix ahead of time and not have to stress about it once you are in the city. Let me know if you need any show recommendations; I am a huge Broadway and theatre fan. If you are looking for a restaurant in the theatre district I would recommend Tony's DiNapoli (family style Italian) or Becco (Italian, with all you can eat homemade pasta and a $25 bottle wine list).

As for Empire State Building vs Top of the Rock, I would definitely recommend TOR. They have unobstructed 360 degree views of the city there, and what’s even better is that you can see Central Park and the Empire State Building from TOR. Even better, they have a timed ticketing system so if you purchase tix in advance you can just show up at the time slot and you will get right up to the Top. In the same area, I would also recommend the Radio City tour – it’s awesome!

Have a wonderful time, and let me know if you have any other questions!

We were there for Thanksgiving last year. Definitely learn the subway system. It's so much cheaper than cabbing it everywhere! Buy a 7 day pass and just be aware of downtown vs uptown. Once you figure that out it's much easier. New Yorkers are super nice too! They were always willing to help us when we were trying to figure out which direction to go. I used Google maps on my phone for the subway instead of Hop Stop and it was AWESOME! :thumbsup2

I wouldn't buy any tickets ahead of time except maybe the Rockettes. We did and I ended up wasting quite a bit of money because of weather, time, etc. For example, we had our tickets in advance for Top of the Rock and it was a rainy, foggy day. I probably could have exchanged for a different day but it wouldn't have fallen in our plans anywhere.

We stayed at the Best Western at Herald Square! You are in a really good location. Just walk down 6th Avenue and you have a straight shot to all the beautiful Christmas displays. There is also a subway station right in the area so it's super easy to get anywhere from there. You HAVE to visit Macy's and it's right around the corner from your hotel! I believe the cab ride from LaGuardia was about $40

Try to make time to see the 9/11 Memorial. There is a chapel there...St. Paul's chapel. It is a very old church (George Washington went there) and has become a living memorial to 9/11. The rescue workers used it as a staging area and it is definitely something to see. :firefight

What about going to the Today Show? We had so much fun! We got there early...like 6am...and were in the opening segment. My mom made us signs before we left and packed them in the bottom of her suitcase.

Have a great time! It is such a wonderful city!

Thanks for the advice, definitely what I was needing. I have already downloaded TodayTix and HopStop.
We are planning to do:
Top of the Rock
Tour Radio City Music Hall
Central Park
Holiday Shops at Bryant Park
Shopping a lot, (more like browsing, I am on the Budget Board :lmao:)
St. Paul's chapel
Today show
I was thinking of getting tickets for TOTR and Radio City Tour once we get there. Do you think they will be available?

hi, i am technically not a new yorker but work next to the rock and live just outside the city in nj. i have to say i am cheesy and super excited that christmas is coming. that week is busy, but not as busy as christmas week or the week before in my opinion. working next to the tree for 4 years i have a good idea of the crowds lol.

definitely figure out the subway, some times of day you can't take a taxi and you can't walk everywhere. many new yorkers are nice, i often give directions myself, so find a friendly face and ask if you are really unsure. i recommend stop hop as well. a lot of great restaurants are downtown too, so its worth it to learn to move around.

if you are going to the rockettes and top of the rock for a budget lunch check out the concourse below. some of the lunch places have long lines but great food (hale and hearty soup is my favorite). you may have a hard time finding a table, but if you go off peak (11 amish or after 2 pm) sometimes you can find a table near the ice rink. its basically like a fancier food court.

to get a great picture of the tree you can stand in front, or if you go the side towards 48th across the st, you get more of the tree.

st. patrick's is right there and while under restoration it is just gorgeous. the stained glass is hard to see inside with the scaffolding, i suggest going to the back of the church (madison ave) to take a peak. tourists rarely go there but the back is actually pretty amazing too, plus there is this hotel across the street with a really pretty courtyard and normally they put up a nice tree. saks fifth avenue is next door. some of the more spectacular windows start here, so my advice for a tour of 5th windows is to start at saks and go up to the park. below saks you have a lot of regular stores (build a bear, guess, fossil etc). you will pass a lot of the luxury jewelers (tiffany's, cartier). henri bendel and bergdorff's are also up there with great windows at the holidays. that corner of the park is where you will see the plaza (reminds me of home alone 2 in the winter) and fao schwartz). that corner of the park is nice too and easy to go in for a quick stroll. if you go down 57th you can window shop in a lot of luxury stores, some have amazing windows too.

as for souvenirs saks, macys, and henri bendel's have cute little store branded momentos like makeup bags and ornaments. i think they are much cuter than anything found in a tourist shop. macys i discovered has this shop in the basement, and they had everything from makeup bags to aprons!

the holiday shops at bryant park are ok, some are just stuff you find at street fairs. keep in mind times square is mostly a mall at this point, the disney store has some nyc things on the first floor but most of the items are things you find in any other store.

the met museum has some gorgeous tiffany art in the american wing. its suggested donation so if you want to go for an hour and don't want to spend the price, you can at the counter offer less and get admission.

in times square a hidden gem if you like to check out church's is st.malachy's. http://www.actorschapel.org/
