I need help finding tank tops or undershirts for DD16 to wear under her thin/sheer tops for school. A lot of the tops that are "in" right now are made from thin or sheer materials. In order to keep her "legal" according to the school district's dress code policy, she needs to wear a "legal" garment underneath. I'm needing a tank or undershirt that has straps that are at least 4 fingertips wide. I need scoop neckline as well. I found some on Amazon that worked as far as the strap width but they are crew neck so they come up too high to work with most of her tops. Just needing basic colors like white, black, navy, etc. Has anyone seen anything that may work. BTW, she is tiny...a size 0 or maybe 1. Thanks for any guidance on where to find something.

I have seen many types of the tanks you're looking for at Target and Walmart. Possibly try forever21 or H&M as well, sometimes they have them too.

OP here. Thank you all for the replies. I can find regular tank tops every where. My problem is that the straps are supposed to be 4 fingertips wide. That is where I am running into a problem.

4 fingertips is mainly just a sleeveless t-shirt. You're probably better off getting some lightweight tees with little sleeves.

K-Mart has the ones with wider straps, but they sold them as a summer item, so they are disappearing quickly; they are mostly on the clearance racks. (I know, because I just replaced a few for myself this past weekend.)

Like I said, clearance item.

PS: Don't forget that you can triple-dip at KMart on points if you have any rewards credit card, a SWA Rapid Rewards Acct, and a Land's End Shop Your Way Rewards membership. Just go through the SWA RR shopping link to get to the KMart site.

Land's End also has wide-strap tanks; again, in the clearance section of the site; you'll find more colors there.

Okay, no offense, but why did she buy school clothing she knew wouldn't pass the school dress code?
Both our kids had very strict dress codes in high school, (Catholic School) so we just didn't buy it if it didn't pass muster as is.

But I realize some dress code rules can be broadly interpreted.
DS, had a running battle with one teacher about "needing to shave". Kept getting sent to the attendance office to buy shaving cream and a razor and shave. Sadly, he had a combination of my heavy beard with acne, so if he shaved when he got up at 6 am, by 1 pm for this teacher's class he had stubble. Attendance Vice Principal finally suggested he not shave one morning, come to school early, come see her, then go shave, and come back to see her to verify he was clean shaven at the start of the day. She then gave him a note to give this special teacher, but ONLY if she tried to sent him to the office to shave again. Darned if she didn't try to send him to the office. The note detailed how he had proven he was clean shaven at the start of the day, and asked this teacher to stop sending him to the office to shave.

You may have better luck shopping in store that do not cater to teens, tanks with wider straps seem to be in the women's/missy sections not in the juniors dept.

Our dress code is pretty strict (public school) my oldest daughter got an in school suspension for wearing flannel pants to school, the rule is no pj type pants, however the school sold these pants as a fundraiser, they have our mascot on them in our school colors. I was furious she got ISS for it as not only did the school sell them, the secretaries in the office wear them all the time!!

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone makes what you're after. You can find sleeveless tees (essentially tank tops with wide straps), but never in a scoop neck. Of course, you can get a tank top in a scoop neck but not with wide enough straps. They just don't exist...at least I couldn't find any. I even tried looking in the kids sections since you said she was tiny.

She will either have to not wear those tops on school days, or she'll have to wear short sleeved shirts with them...or maybe she can try out a scoop neck tank with as wide of straps as you can find and see if she gets in trouble or not.

buy a scoop neck t-shirt and cut the sleeves off. should cover four fingers wide then, right?

That's what I was thinking.
I was thinking this, too!
Since knits don't unravel, and this is a popular finish treatment on some clothes now, you could easily buy the shirts and cut them.

Also you could find a home seamstress and have some custom made.
