Need Help Getting Started

I would like to make t-shirts myself for members of our family going with us to Walt Disney World late in the summer. I have no clue how to get started. I see many great designs in this area of DISboards but am not sure how to proceed beyond looking at the designs. HELP! (If there is already a thread that tells a beginner how to do this, can I be linked to that thread? If not, I hope someone can tell me what to do so I can start on my project.) Thanks!
