I am planning to travel from the Akron, OH area to Jim Thorpe, PA in July but, for the life of me, I can't find the amounts for tolls. I got on the PA Turnpike's web site. I am trying to use their toll calculator.

You are to select the entering interchange, which I'm pretty sure is 2-Gateway (Ohio Connection)

then you are to select the exiting interchange. Now this is where I am having trouble. The map directions I have, show me on I80 & merging onto PA-93 via Exit 256. I can't find Exit 256 anywhere on the list of choices of exiting interchanges. The closest one is #105-Wilkes Barre.

If I go with that one the total cost of tolls, one way from Akron, OH to Jim Thorpe, PA is $32.60. Does that sound right? It seems kind of high for me for 1 state.

Help!

I-80 isn't a toll road & is more direct, and that is the route you chose with exit 256. I google mapped the directions and taking that route isn't a toll route.

If you took the OH turnpike into the PA turnpike, then you'd get off at Carlisle exit 226, and then have to go halfway up the state on I-81. (Edited because I remembered I don't get on the PA turnpike at the gateway! I pulled up the PA turnpike and it'd be a $19.05 toll from the gateway)

But I'd take I-80, really it's waaaay more direct and it's free!

Oh and I do know from personal experience that it is not a toll road. I grew up on that side of PA!

Yup I-80 is the way to go. Free all the way and its a straight line pretty much to boot. Also some nice truck stops and restaurants along way, but it can get a little dull scenery wise. Much better than the turn-pike. Don't know from Akron, but from the Pittsburgh area to Jim Thorpe on I-80 should be in the neighborhood of a 4-5 hr drive(no stops). I've traveled from Bloomsburg to Pittsburgh and Jim Thorpe isn't far from there.

Thank you so much! I knew I could find help here!:goodvibes

I 80 and Pa 93 is the way to go. No tolls. You must be going there because they got the design for the haunted mansion from one of the mansions there:)

Personally, I would suggest going Interstate 80 until you get to the northeast extension of the PA turnpike (exit #277 from I-80). Get on the Northeast Extension going south (you'll be entering at the Pocono toll booth) and get off at exit 74, Mahoning Valley, for Jim Thorpe. You'd only be on the turnpike for 19 miles and the tolls would be $1.65 each way.

friend of pooh asked: I am being nosey, but what are you going to JIm Thorpe for?

fop: I am going to Noonefest July 8 & 9th at Penn's Peake. I am a member of the Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits) fan club!:) That makes me a NOONATIC!:rotfl:

I will also see Peter at Epcot for one of the Flower Power concerts!:hippie:

I just checked my GPS. Here is how it has me routed:

Keep right on I80E to Hazleton.,

Exit 284 to PA 115 to Blakeslee

Keep Right onto PA 115 A to Lake Harmony

Right on Hwy 903 S

Left on Maury Rd.

How do these directions sound vs what you have suggested?

I appreciate your help!:)

This is what I would have told you to do initially.

This will be just as easy and less expensive. I recall that my DH and I took this route when we went to a cycle shop in Blakeslee because it was just as easy to take this route as to go back to the turnpike. Before the kids came, we used to mountain bike in Jim Thorpe all the time.

I-76, the PA Turnpike is the only toll road in the state (at the current time). They are proposing adding tolls to I-78 and/or I-80. Have a safe trip.

I76 becomes a non-toll road in King of Prussia/Valley Forge. The E/W turnpike turns into I276 there and it splits into I476 in Norristown, where it becomes a toll road to the north and a non-toll road to the south. Same turnpike... different interstate numbers.
