My DS10 just started taking Focalin today. We have noticed he has been having tics. (he is moving his tongue in and out of his mouth and unable to control or stop it) His Dr. was closed today and I will not be able to get in touch with him until the morn. I am really bothered by this. Should I give him the meds tomorrow morn. or wait until I can reach the Dr? Can he prescribe a different med or will all ADHD meds cause the tics? He seemed more compliant and more focused today, but the tics are really starting to worry me. Even ds said he can not go to school acting like that or everyone will make fun of him. I know that you guys are not Dr.'s, but I am hoping someone can shed some light and ease my anxieties until I can speak to the dr.

My dd has taken both Adderal and Concerta without incident. I have not heard of the medication your ds is on though. I would call the doctor in the morning though. IMHO I would not give it to my dd until I spoke with the doctor. Good luck!

I'd stop the meds. Some ADHD meds can exacerbate Tourette's syndrome and other tics. Call the doctor in the a.m. and see what he says

I agree, you should stop the meds, there are many options out there ( my ds takes Ritalin LA) that you should find one that works for him. It took us several tries to find the right meds, be patient.

I got a call back from the dr. and he wants us to stop the meds. I have an appt. on Thurs. to see about a new med. Thanks for all your help!

I just wanted to send you a hug from a mother who has had to put her son on meds. It is a tough decision and it often takes a couple of tries to get it right. Hang in there my ds is 9 now, taking a mix of meds that are currently working.

I am glad you heard from the dr to set your mind at ease. Good Luck.

My stepson who is 11 has been through a lot of the adhd meds and he has had tics from all of them. He is taking medicine for the tics now also. Not the most desirable situation but it's better than him not being able to control himself. He still has some mild tics that aren't very noticable and that don't bother him.

Hang in there. It's tough going through the various meds but it's usually in thier best interest. Just watch for other side affects that could be worse than tics. That's what happened with him. He had shortness of breath on one of the meds and could never seem to catch his breath. We decided that a few minor tics were better than that.

DD6 has ADHD and we tried 3 medicines before we found the one that worked for her (BTW it is Focalin XR). :grouphug: I know its a tough decision to make . I will keep you in my prayers..When you find the right meds it will make all the difference in the world

I am so sorry for what you are going through. My DD5 has been on Focalin XR for 2 months now without incident. She is much more focused and is doing much better in school. I would stop the medication until I spoke to the Dr. We tried 3 different meds before we finally found one that worked for her, that might be the case, or I have heard that sometimes there are negative side effects for the first few weeks, and that it really takes that amount of time to see if the medication is right for your child. Good luck, hope all goes well for your son. :goodvibes

Thank you for all the wonderful thoughts. :goodvibes I hope with time we will find what med is right for him.

ASAP!! DO NOT GIVE HIM ANOTHER DOSE! Call your doctor, it could have long lasting effects!!! Please, please call your doctor TODAY!! before you give him more!!! :goodvibes

ADHD meds are trial and error and your kid might need to be changed, my dtr was on concerta for a while and it did nothing now she is on adderall and working better, talk to your doctor and also ask on the disabilities board
