... or somebody that knows more than I do.

DS's fourth grade teacher sent all the kids in her class a CD with a slide show of memories from the school year. I guess she used PowerPoint to make it. We don't have PowerPoint so what program do I need to use to view the slide show? I really don't know what I'm doing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Her instructions to play it say:

1. Insert CD
2. Click on My Computer
3. Click on "D" Drive
4. Click on Data Folder
5. Click 2005-2006 Memories Ms. Barco's Class Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show

So, after I do this my computer asks me what program I want to use to play it. I've tried QuickTime Player, RealOne Player, Windows Media Player and my Kodak software that came with my camera. Nothing works. Do I have to have PowerPoint to play it?

I believe you need Powerpoint to play it.

Here's an idea...

Go to openoffice.org. It's a free program that gives you a spreadsheet, document, presentation, and other programs, that mimic Microsoft's. And I do believe it's compatible. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what else to try.

But go download that program and see if that helps!

Thanks!!! We downloaded the PowerPoint Viewer and we can see the slide show, but the sound isn't working. :confused3 There's a little speaker on the first page, but nothing happens when we click on it.

Is sound working for your other applications? If so, contact the teacher who made the presentation and ask that person if they put sound into it. Maybe its a silent presentation? :joker: :badpc: :badpc:

I don't know about you Zandy595 but I just loathe computers. I've spent decades working on them. You might want to check if the volume is turned up enough. I know that sounds silly, but its often just those things that can be wrong. Best of luck with your computer! :sunny:

Yes, sound is working for other applications. We know there's sound in the presentation because DS actually saw it at school. And in the Data Folder there are 8 sound files.

Powerpoint is very picky as to where/how you link the sound files. I do believe that if it is not setup properly, sound will not function on other machines setup differently. I believe what needs to happen is the sound files need to be inserted 'pathless'. You can read more here: http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00155.htm (about 1/2 way down)

I'd be real tempted to get ahold of the teacher and mention to her that you can't watch the video. I'm sure she gave it to other people who can't view it either..........

personally, I don't know anyone with powerpoint on their computer. :confused3

Well, we can at least see the slide show. I wonder if she even thought about people not having PowerPoint at home. The PowerPoint Viewer is free to download though. Thanks again, Dan.

She is the nicest teacher DS has ever had. None of his other teachers have ever done anything like this for their class. She even sent a SASE home with each kid on their last day so they can write to her over the summer.
