Hi we are looking to buy a scooter for my husband as he is 73 and can't walk for long periods of time. we have rented the scooters at disney but they are 40 a day. thought it would be cheaper to buy one as we like to go to disney for the day but have stopped because of the cost of the scooter. I know pep boys have ones for 500. but that is a little high for us as we are on a fixed income and we were hoping to spend about 200-350. any ideas would be very helpful. tia marianne

I would suggest looking in the Yellow Pages under both the Medical Equipment and Repair or the Scooter categories and go to a dealer. See what can be gotten from them as Used equipment. Note those companies specialize in medical equpment and can do repairs if necessary.

Another source, at vary reasonable prices, may be a Salvation Army or Goodwill Thrift Store.

I know that I have seen ads for a brand new Pride Go-Go at Florida Mobility for under $600. I would stick with a place that could provide service if there was a problem rather than going for lowest cost.

I know I've seen lots of ads on TV for power chairs and scooters that claim Medicare will pay for it. Have you checked into that? I don't think you have to be completely wheelchair dependent--probably just need a note from the doctor that says it's necessary.

There are new Medicare rules for wheelchairs and Scooters that really require that the person has to be dependent on a wheelchair or scooter in their home for Medicare to pay for it. The rules took effect in October 2006. You do need a doctor's face to face exam and a prescription that specifies you do need it in the home.
One of the reasons for the changes was that some of the scooter companies were doing doctor's exams over the phone to get the prescription and Medicare was paying for a lot of equipment that was more than was really necessary.
