I am spearheading a project for my DGD's Kindergarten class to give to another class who has been affected by a hurricane or other disaster. That is something tangible for the students to understand. We want the children to learn to give to others........ however......... most of the kids come from lower income families, so funds are tight.

We have some financial donors to cover donations of supplies but we want the students to organize the donations, maybe make bookmarks, cards, or classroom decorations, etc..... to be a part of this.

Can anybody direct me on how to find a classroom? I have been to adoptaclassroom.org but all I find are lists of schools and without any info on them. I would like to find a classroom that I can communicate with to get specific and helpful ideas.

Anybody have any suggestions, friends, your own classrooms, etc....? Thanks!

Try talking to the Red Cross. They may have a contact in an affected disaster area that can direct you. You can also go to FEMA.gov. On the home page there is a link for Volunteers/Donations for Gustav affected areas. It has contact information for different regions that were affected.

Any school in Galveston ISD was hurt by Ike. Many schools have combined classes, since some are completely closed. Contact www.gisd.org and I'm sure they can put you in touch with a needy class.

Good luck!

What a neat idea...
Galveston area of course, Orange County, Jefferson County... in Texas

Cameron Parish schools in Louisiana- I know 2 of the schools were pretty much wiped out there- but all just started back to school today. 1 school was able to open a week or so ago in its own grounds, 1 reopened today in our parish- using an old store as a the school- (they have cubicle dividers for classrooms), and the last 2 schools combined together to create one- in one of the schools- they are sharing classrooms and facilities- and have mostly repaired the damage to the one school- at least enough to allow kids in.

This is always a great thing...

I know from hurricanes Katrina and Rita- books for libraries (classroom and schools) were always a much requested item too...

Thanks!

The teacher and I have talked about this and we want the students to learn how to give of themselves........ volunteer!..... at an early age. We thought that helping peers from a disaster area would be a way to help. We can share pictures of a hurricane/disaster area and that would be a tangible connection for them.

I'll try to make connections today.
