I've offered to paint a calendar for the equine centre I volunteer at, and I need help deciding on the breed, colour and positioning on the horse for each month. The calendar already has a colour/theme for each month, and a canvas area in the middle for the painting. I would like to match up These will be auctioned off in about a month or so to raise money for the therapeutic riding program and/or the new facilities.

Now, I have some ideas, but a few are stumping me, and in a few cases, I'm having a hard time finding the references I need (such as tack references).

Janurary is 'Celebrate' with a blue/yellow colour theme

- For this one I wanted to do either a Peruvian Paso or Paso Fino, performing a collected gait, termino or the paso largo gaits. I would like to paint them in full festival tack, but I'm having trouble fining good references for this.

Feb is 'Love' and has a light blue/pink theme

- This one I'm stumped on. I though painting two horses nuzzling or grooming each other would be cute, but I have no idea what breed to go for.

March is 'Grace' with yellow/green

- for this one I very much wanted to paint an Icelandic horse in a full flying gait, or skeid. Maybe the tolt.

April is 'Destiny' and is turquoise and yellow

- Again, a bit stumped, but I thought wither a Quarter Horse or Morgan would fit well here.

May is 'Beauty' with a purple background

- The obvious and popular choice would be an arabian, though I thought an Akhal-Teke would be interesting as well.

June is 'Life' in red and yellow

- Again, stumped here. I was thinking perhaps a spanish mustang? Mabye a Kiger mustang or a Nakota horse?

July is 'Hope' in green

- For this one I wanted to do an Abaco Barb, the most critically endangered breed of horse (was down to 3 individuals at one point).

Aug is 'Moments' in gold

- I'm drawing a blank here.

Sept is 'Remember' in yellow

- Either a przewalski's horse or a few key early equids/equines from the evolution of horses ( Hyracotherium, Merychippus and the modern equus) or a cavalry horse.

Oct is 'Dream' with blue

- Nothing comes to mind

Nov is 'Gratitude' in yellow with a bit of blue

- A blank again

And finally Dec is 'Believe' in pink.

- Perhaps a mythological horse? Though I would rather do a real breed.

The cover can be done as well and is the same as May, 'Beauty' with purple.

- I thought an andalusian or other Iberian horse.

So that is what I have so far. I'm open to any and all suggestions, since nothing is in stone yet. Thank you in advance to any inout you may have!

I don't know enough about horse breeds to comment, but just wanted to say it sounds like a really cool project!

My only thought for the "Dream" -- one of the popular/famous race horses? Did one come from behind, or had odds stacked against him/her?

Hmm... Mine That Bird comes to mind, as well as Man O'War, Secretariat (Hey, isn't there a movie coming out about him?) Northern Dancer, and Seabiscuit. Or maybe even a foundation horse, like the Darley or Godolphin Arabian. Any other ideas?

A foal would be cute too! I was considering one for 'celebrate', though I like painting gaited horses and fancy tack more. :P Maybe a mustang foal for 'Life'?

Thank you!

you need to have a Fjord!!!

 My goodness YES! I just need to find a place to put it. Do you think I should put one in Aug, Oct, Nov or Dec? OOH, maybe I'll put two of them in Feb!

May - I would switch the Arab out of here and put a thoroughbred - maybe Secretariat in full stride - nothing more beautiful than watching that horse run. May because that is the month of the running of the roses.

June - Life - Move the Arab here nuzzling her new foal

October Dec -Dream or Believe - a girl with her pony standing next to the rail watching an Olympian compete.

Nov- Gratitude - A farmer putting up his Belgian after plowing the fields

I don't know the first thing about horses...BUT...;)

We just read the novel "Justin Morgan Had a Horse"--a story that his historically based in the origination of the Morgan horse. It was about a horse that was written off due to his size. It was thought he wouldn't be good for anything---but it turned out he was stronger than pretty much any other horse as well as oxen, he is very gentle, and apparently loved to work. The breed was named after Justin Morgan and according to some googling set the course for American horses. Also, when bred with any mare of any breed, the Morgan horse traits dominate. There is also a museum in Vermont for this breed of horse.

Not sure what month you could put this breed on, but I encourage you to read up on it an maybe fit it in somewhere. It is a very cool story of how the breed came to be.

I was considering putting the Morgan under 'Destiny' just because of this story! :thumbsup2 Plus, a well bred Morgan is a very gorgeous horse.

Aww. Might be a bit difficult to translate to a painting. The foal is cute, but the adult head doesn't give one a good idea of the fjord look. Still, thank you for the link, I love looking at pictures of fjords!

ETA Just the positioning! I didn't mean she's not a nice fjord!

I think for October "dream" you should use a big black Friesian. It fits the season and the word dream.

Hmm, good idea. All the long flowing hair to paint  They're most certainly my favourite harness horse!

November-maybe a person putting a yellow and blue blanket on the horse. Kind of like the horse is grateful for the blanket...I don't know.

Since I am partical to quarterhorses-- How about using for dream. Everybody who loves horses knows this breed. I will volunteer a pic of my horse :rotfl2:

You know what, maybe they would work well in Aug. 'Moments'. Since pretty much anything could work there. :P Now I need some artsy reason for it though... Different 'moments' of versatility?

Glad to see you´ve go an Icelandic on the list, that would otherwise have been my suggestion ;)
