I need new flatware. Our's, flatware is over 20 yrs old and cheap. I want to buy a good set for every day use. I don't want to break the bank over silverware
does anyone knows a brand and good equality? I don't mind spending about $80. I was checking out Overstock..but sorry, I never heard of their brands...maybe 2 of them. I am not into name brand products;) .

Since our 20th ann. is in May (silver, I thought this would be perfect) , dont flame me because I want this silverware for my ann..I am just down to earth kind of gal:) .

How many place settings are you looking to get? Does that $80 include everything + serving pieces? What style are you looking for?

There are a few 20-piece sets at Bed, Bath and Beyond that are $80 and below. If you were willing to spend about $100, they have a few Oneida sets that are more traditional. Linens and Things seems to have more of a selection in that price range. Again, if you are willing to bump your budget up to $100, you can get 45 piece sets by well known manufaturers.

I would not buy flatware online. We bought new about 8 years ago. The one thing that I wanted was spoons that would not bend when you scoop ice cream out of the box. I did the bend test on all kinds of silverware. We ended up buying ours at Wal Mart. We bought enough for 12. The one thing they didn't have was the serving pieces to match. I don't think we spent more than $80 and it's still just as good as it was new. I would check TJ Maxx. I saw a set for 8 with the serving pieces for $22 on clearance. If they would have had two set I would have bought it. The spoons didn't bend and the pattern was very simple. I let me husband pick the pattern on the Wal Mart set and he choose this one that looks like wheat. I don't love the wheat. You don't have to spend a bunch to get nice silverware.

Last year I bought a set of Reed & Barton flatware from QVC, and I am so impressed by it. It is very strong and you can tell when you are holding a piece of it that it is a sturdy piece of flatware.

I like plan silverware, nothing fancy. I am looking for a large set. 45 pieces is ideal. We always have company so I need a bigger set. I'm like Hensandchickens, I want something that won't bend.:rotfl2: and forks that aren't weak.

I been looking for around for awhile. This pass weekend I did take time out at Walmart checkout on what they have. :rotfl2: I was trying to bend there forks and spoons.

I was just going to post this! I replaced ours last summer, also about 20 years old. I looked online and ended up going to Linens N Things with a 20% off coupon. The kind I was going to buy online was so flimsy.

Amazon and Ross Simon have both had some unbelieveable deals on name brand silverware in the past. I would look for 18/10 in the product description of whatever brand you buy, as that seems to be the sturdiest and best quality. (The numbers refer to the chromium and nickel content.) As long as you pay attention to this, I think buying online is fine, and often cheaper for the quality you get.

My DH and i only had "college dorm silverware" when we first met.

10 yrs ago when we bought our first house my DF asked us if we needed anything. One of the things he got us was new silverware.

I got service for 12 (so three 4 packs) and the serving items set

After 10 years, the set still looks very new and shiny.

No need to spend alot of money.... I thing we spent under $60 for all

This is very good flatware:

We love our set but got it 1/2 off at the outlets here in Orlando. We got the CARA set of 8 placesettings (knives, small spoons, large spoons, small forks, large forks) for $120.

I would check TJ Max and Marshalls too. I recently saw several set on cleareance that were excellent quality.

Be sure you get 8/18 if it's stainless and pay special attention to the forks. Often the knives and spoons are excellent and the forks are still flimsy or rough.

The stuff I have now and have been using for about seven years came from Target on a really good clearance. Then when I went back later there was some marked down to nothing, so I got some more. I still have another 8 place settings in a box.

A couple of years ago I bought a great set of new Reed and Barton on ebay. It was a set from QVC originally. Great flatware, BUT I need replacement pieces and extra teaspoons. QVC no longer carries it and I can't find the pattern anywhere (although, it has been a couple of months since I checked) including Replacements.
My suggestion is to buy something that you know you can add on to later. Of course, patterns do get discontinued but if you get a brand and pattern that is a big seller, you will have a chance to replace those spoons that the kids think are disposable (oh wait, that's my kids :rotfl2: )

I second Reed and Barton. I got a service for 12 with steak knives and all the serving pieces for right a $100. Can't go wrong with Reed and Barton, it is by far the best flatware I have ever owned.

I run a daycare out of our home; I bought Reed and Barton from QVC right after Xmas and it is great. It heavy I never worry about the kids using it. If a spoon or two makes it out to the sandbox I don't worry I know it will be fine! It was so worth the money.

I agree! I got my current Reed & Barton silverware when Amazon had an amazing deal going, I remember I paid $40 and I think we have a service for 12. It's held up incredibly well and I couldn't be more pleased.

That is an incredible price. I live near the R&B factory & outlet store and even there you don't see entire sets for that price.

This is really good advice- exactly what I was going to post. We bought 2 sets of Gorham flatware from TJMaxx two years ago and I have had no problems with it.

I just went back and dug up the order in my Amazon history. I forgot that in addition to the silverware I got a set of glasses we're still using, a cutting board and a margarita set we gave as a gift :lmao: Oh, and I remembered my total right but the silverware is Oneida, not R&B (still good stuff). My total would have been $49.xx but I used a $10 gift cert from doing a survey. This was back in '04, I don't think I've gotten a better deal from then since!
