Need help: Any Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade experts in NYC?

We are going to be in NYC for Thanksgiving this year. The biggest reason we are going is because I have always wanted to be there for the Macy's Thanskgiving Day Parade. Are any of you familiar with the route and know of any great places to watch the parade? We are staying off of W 49th Street (and 7th, I think). I know Macy's recommends somewhere between 61 and 77, does anynoe have any suggestions from personal experience? We also cannot line up at 6:30am to save a spot - we will have our baby with us.

Can't tell you much about where to watch the parade but one of my favorite memories is to watch them blow up the balloons the night before in Central Park. So much fun!
