I'm sure there are tons of threads on this, but I can't search, I'm getting an error. So... in Nov, we're going to Disney. It'll be our DDs first flight. They'll be 5 and 2.5 yrs old. Can anyone give me some tips? I don't let either have gum yet, so I thought to bring some fruit snacks for take off and landing. We were thinking of getting portable DVDs for them as well. They'll also each have a backpack w/some of their toys. Any tips for the flight to go well? Thanks!

So far your plan sounds good. I would suggest mabybe getting them a new coloring book and giving it to them on the plane, maybe some pipe cleaners..my girls love playing with these..keeps them busy for a while.
Since it is their first flight maybe buying Ear Planes for them..just in case their ears bother them. My 4 1/2 yo dd(and my DH) has been using them for about 2 yrs now.

also maybe letting her dring from a bottle or a sports type bottle, something that she can kinda suck on to keep the pressure from building up in her ears the dvds will prob be a great idea and remember to let the airline know that it is her first time flying they may let her go up to meet the pilot,(dont know if they still do this or not) at the very least will prob give her the pilots wings :smooth:

Unfortunately, since 9/11 they only let people meet the pilot and see the cockpit before/after the flight.

Suckers are also a good option for ears. I think that as long as you have lots of snacks and activities for the kids you will be fine.

Something we noticed this time around--book 2 window seats. There was trouble on our flight out this time--but luckily it wasn't a full flight so the youngest got a window anyway.

On the trip back I asked the oldest to be the bigger person and allow her sister to get the window. Hubby thought it would be wise to be 4 across--but they covet that window.

I booked our Hawaii trip as 2+2 so that each child gets a window.

Oh I forgot--some airlines still give out flight wings. We've been on several trips and it doesn't happen too often. But it wouldn't hurt to ask and you will have a nice souvenir!

Sounds like youre all set! But skip the fruit snack and bring juice boxes. The constant swallowing is better.

Just subbing to get advice on this too. I have flown with DS (1 yo @ the time) but in Sept, will be flying w/ 2 kids (DS almost 4, DD 1). We have a short flight, so that's good. Saving snacks & juice until takeoff helped us before so we'll probably try that again.

I was in the same situation last November with the same aged kids going on their first flight. I got many very useful tips from fellow DISers.

I made each of my kids a little gift bag which I kept as a surprise to them until just before takeoff. I included little inexpensive things which would keep them preoccupied while taking off and during the flight. I included some tiny little princess dolls with change of clothes for my daughter, a couple of matchbox cars for my son, some small decks of playing cards, PEZ dispensers, etc. What kid doesn't like to get a little present? This started the trip off on a good note.

I also got the special markers that don't write on anything but the special paper for my daughter to color with and some Disney activity books and a new pen for my son. They both did amazingly well with no major problems. The only thing was that we hit a little turbulence and my son got a little queasy. We gave him a little bit of ginger ale and since he never gets to drink soda it was a big deal for him.

I also brought along a couple of gift bags which I made up of things that I picked up at Disney, mostly of stuff that they had been eyeballing in a store. Again, nothing too expensive but something that made them take their mind off the flight. I don't think I spent more than $40 total and they had a great time with everything.

I also used the earplanes and they worked well for my kids.

Good luck and have a wonderful time. We just made plans to go back so I will be hunting for a few special things again myself. My son did get a Leapfrog Leapster for Christmas which he will bring this time around. That alone should keep him occupied for at least an hour.

We've flown quite a bit with DD3, since she was 6 months on up.

The worse part for us is going through airport security. Our watches and phones are in a ziplock bag until we get through security so we don't have to scramble to take things off. My husband usually has the job of putting everthing in the bins, and I try to consolodate everything so we don't have a zillion small bags to put on the conveyor belt. I take DD and I'm in charge of folding the stroller. Sometimes we're in the line with the "small" machine and either the stroller or car seat won't fit in. :sad2:

We normally try to book flights during nap time, so she'll sleep during the flight.

For take off and landing, we give her something to drink. Went from using bottle, to sippy cup, to juice box. One word of caution about juice boxes-- if there's still liquid in the box, sometimes the change in air pressure will make the juice squirt out the straw- I ended up with a very wet, sticky leg b/c I didn't realize this!

Lollypops helped at take off too. I just buy the small dum-dum sized ones, or the Safe-T-Pops. Those are the pops that have a looped stick, not a hard one so kids can't poke themselves. They make Winnie-the-Pooh ones now, which my daughter loves. Pops are saved as special treats for my daughter, so she'll readily take one if offered.

We bring a DVD player, but only take it out for emergencies-- don't forget headphones! Planes are usually noisy enough that it'll be difficult to hear the audio, or you'll have to turn it up very loud and it'll disturb other passengers.
Try on the headphones before getting on the plane, since not all styles will fit little heads! We ended up getting cheap "old-school" headphones from Radio Shack. A lot of the newer styles won't adjust small enough. Many portable DVD players have two earphone jacks.

I take off her shoes so she won't kick the poor passenger seated in front of her.

I also started making up activity bags for the past few trips. I try to find a zippered bag to keep things easily contained and just fill it with things to keep her busy. Foam stickers, small coloring book, construction paper pad, multi-color pens, decorated scotch tape, and crayons. Anything new-to-her is good! We take the activity bag into the parks with us too, so she is occupied while waiting in line (I only take one or two things though).

I've seen nice boxes of Disney crayons at the dollar store and WalMart. There was a Winnie the Pooh and Princess version. The crayons snap into the case, so you don't have to worry about them rolling out all over the place as soon as the box is opened.

Another thing we do since we take the car seat on the plane-- when (if) they allow people traveling with children to board, my husband will go first and set up the seat for DD. I wait with DD until the final rows are called at the gate and then board so we don't have her restlessly sitting on the plane the whole time. She'd much rather run around for a bit at the gate.

I usually bring a small blanket, since not all planes have them available. It can get chilly and if DD will nap, a blankie is required!

We try hard to be engaging during the whole flight. Husband and I will make up stories and get silly with DD to make time pass more quickly.

All of our flights have gone really well (even my solo w/DD ones!). People around us usually say they didn't realize she was sitting right there b/c she was so quiet and well behaved.

Oh, and TONS OF SNACKS! We bring granola bars, forbidden sugary dry cereal, gold fish, animal crackers, and fruit gummies. We try not to give her too much to drink so we can avoid the bathroom on the plane.

Good Luck!

My SIL makes a trip to the dollar store before her flights with her 2-1/2 year old. She keeps the stuff a secret and pulls out a new item every 15 minutes or so when he gets bored. She tried giving it all to him at once, but he got bored right away. By constantly pulling out something "new" it keeps the wow factor.

I, too, will be making my first flight with my DH, mother, sister and sons - DS4 and DS2 - in two weeks. (Can hardly wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!) The boys have never flown and we haven't flown since before 9/11. Any tips for passing through security? We hear all kinds of things to do/don't do and I'd love to get some advice from some veteran travlers!

Be prepared to take your shoes off and put them in the bins. (They don't always require it, but if you're prepared it'll go easier)

Good idea about the plastic ziploc for keys, cellphones, change, everything else you have in your pockets.

Some metal barrettes, headbands, etc. sometimes set off the beeper. Try not to wear anything metal.

Explain to your kids about going through security so it's not a surprise to them. Let them know that everyone has to go through by themselves. I've seen too many kids get scared because mommy has to go back through and the kid can't go with them again. Sometimes kids get upset becuase a favorite stuffed animal or blankie has to go on the belt. Let them know about it and tell them they'll get it back on the other side after they take a "picture" of it.

Don't hover after you go through - grab your stuff, find a chair and then get your shoes back on (they usually have a few chairs now)

Be careful - sometimes there is a table that is used for a more thourough search at the end - it'll have a sign that says not to put anything on it - don't (unless they tell you to).

They may wand you or want to search your bags. It's no big deal - it's random. If you're a woman you can request a woman do the wanding.

Our travel MagnaDoodle is a lifesaver on flights!!!

My daughter is 4 now and the travel size "Doodle" helped her keep occupied on an international flight even.

It's a lot easier than coloring books/crayons, etc because the pen-thing is attached to the Doodle by a string and when the child is done with what they are doing, they can just move the piece that wipes the board clean.

I also always prepare my family for security before we even get in the line. If they have change or jewelry, I make sure it is all in one place and we make sure to wear easy-to-remove shoes as much as possible. That way, you aren't trying to organize while standing in line, having to move every couple of seconds.

Lots of wipes, ziplocs, saltines, and a change of clothing for both kids and adults. If the kids have never flown before they may get airsick, and you need to be prepared for that possibility. I'd stick with water or clear juices if at all possible; red dye is not a good situation with airsickness. Also, little kids usually cannot use airsick bags too well; if you think this may happen you might want to bring along a lidded freezer container that can be used as a basin.

:thumbsup2 Crayola ColorWonder markers. They come in kits, or you can buy the markers and the paper/coloring books seperately. When DD was 2.5, we flew across country alone together on FF miles (= 2 layovers each way), and these things were a lifesaver! She loved coloring and I didn't have to worry about reimbursing Delta for new upholstery ;)

I've also packed magnadoodles, colorforms and FP little people. The toys also come in handy when we go back to the resort for a rest - she doesn't have to nap, but she does have to play/read quietly on the bed.

We've taken 3 different flights with our kids (one cross country) and what I did was purchase new, inexpensive things for the kids to do on the plane. I didn't tell them what I had just packed their little backpacks with the goodies so they would be surprised on the plane. I packed them with playdoh (it worked really well on the tray tables and didn't stick and it comes in resealable bags now), the ColorWonder markers and paper, magnetic activity sets, sticker books, coloring books, etc. Anything that they could do on the tray tables that wouldn't cause a mess. We also rented a dvd player and a video they hadn't seen yet from the airport on our cross country trip and turned it back in when we got to our destination. Your airport and destination airport would need to have the kiosks. It's called InMotion Pictures (www.inmotionpictures.com) and it was so convenient! The airline wasn't playing a movie that the kids would be interested in so I was glad to have that. We rented one of those for the flight over and the flight back. I also pack snacks and juice boxes or those little 1/2 pint bottles of water in their bags too and I carried a bag with a change of clothes, etc. for both kids. Have a wonderful flight!
