I have a canon eos rebel purchased in 2009. I want to upgrade. My college age son would like a camera that can take good video..it is his hobby and is planning of going to film/photography school. I do not have thousands to get the 5d. What camera do you recommend? Is there a camera that would be entry level 5d/ I do not understand technical terms, shutter speeds etc. Also would you suggest i trade in my camera for the 200.00 discount through canon? I was also looking at video cameras but hope to find a camera that can take great video and slow motion. Ugh help, can you tell I am confused. :confused3

Almost every current dSLR can take very good video. Question is whether you want very good video... Or if he plans to bring the camera to film school, he may need professional level video.

Aside from video, what types of photography does he concentrate on?

If you want professional level image quality in a cheaper "entry level" body, you can get the Canon 6d, Nikon d610, and Sony a7, each for around under $1500. They lack some of the bells and whistles of more expensive models, but deliver basically the same image quality.
