She booked a studio (44 points) for a few weeks from now (inside 30 days) and now would like to cancel. She has a December use year so:

1) I know they go into holding but does she need to use them by Dec 1, or Dec 31? I think it's Dec 1 right?

2) If she transfers them to me, can I book a ressie with them for next Dec 28 and 29 for example-or are the points tracked that close on a transfer?

3) Can she put those on the rent/trade board as a must use by December 1 or 31 if it is?

4) Oh also, is the right to reserve at only 30 days out on holding points waived if rented or transfered?

Thanks-we are planning a XMAS trip for next year instead, and she doesn't want to lose these points.

Ok, I'm not really an expert but I had this problem this year so here goes....

1. You need to use them by the end of the use year which would be Nov 30
2. I don't think that you can transfer holding points....but if you can, the same use restrictions would apply...
3. You can try to make a reservation for someone else with the points, but the same use by Nov 30 restrictions apply as well as the restriction on answer #4
4. I believe the restriction on use is that you can't make a reservation more than 60 days out with these points.

I am open to corrections. We had this happen this year. We decided to make a reservation for our friends with the extra points. While waiting for them to make a decision we decided to take an extra trip over the kids exam break in February...then they also wanted to reserve....so long story short...to avoid losing 11 holding points we made reservations using over 100 points !! Oh well, can't complain about an extra trip and sharing the magic with friends !

1) Nov. 30
2) Holding points cannot be transferred
3) She can put it on rent/trade board but she cannot call to make a reservation until 60 days from check-out, so she will need to post that to eliminate lots of non-applicable responses.
4) The 60 (not 30) day rule applies to rentals (again, the points can't be transferred).

Thanks, we will work it out somehow, it's not a huge amount of points.

Actually holding account points can be transferred, it's just that they are supposed to retain their holding account status. In reality they often are restricted after transfer.

No kidding! When I recently had holding points to deal with, MS told me they could not be transferred. Guess I got a newbie CM at MS.

While my info comes more from my interpretation of the POS and related info, here is a quote from an email from MS.
Holding account points can be transferred, however, Holding Account Vacation Points will remain in a Holding Account in the new membership.
It's certainly something that could change at some point.

#2... yes they can, but they retain all the same characteristics (resort, expiration, and 60 day restriction) as if they were still in the original membership.
#3... it's 60 days from the check IN date

So holding point reservations are different from other reservations? If I want to book Dec. 2 on regular points at 11 months, I would have to call Jan. 3. But if they are holding points I can call 60 days before Dec. 2? I could swear I was told by the CM 60 days from checkout. Maybe I wasn't listening carefully enough.

You say you are planning a Christmas time trip next year. Her challenge will be making a 60 day out ressie at that time of year. It can be VERY difficult to find any accomodations in a 60 day window in November/December. If you or she can find a way to slip in another trip in the summer or September, you will find it a lot easier to find something at 60 days out.

You guys scared her into keeping the ressie and going anyway, which is awesome-they need a break. She also still wants to plan next NY week which we are happy to hear so thanks all.:thumbsup2

It would be Oct 3, not Oct 2 for a Dec 3 checkout.
