We have invited the 13 year old daughter of a dear friend to come with us for a short WDW vacation. We will be flying and wondered what type of identification/parent authorization we should have for our guest. Our concern isn't Disney so much as the airport (TSA) and airline (SWA). The last thing we want is to have a problem at the airport when we are trying to leave. I should also add that the young lady, although she resides here in the US, has joint British/German citizenship and a German passport. Any advice to avoid an unforeseen problem?

At the very least, I would get a notorized letter from her parents giving you permission to travel with their daughter: including travel dates, destination, flight and hotel arrangements, their contact information. I would also have them include permission to make emergency medical decisions on their behalf until they are able to be contacted.

The last point is the most important. Most of the rest isn't required for domestic travel.

Under 18 doesn't need ID to fly within the US. So you don't need anything to fly with her.

At the airport you don't have to show anything. They really don't care whether she is related to you or not. The just match people up to the tickets so they may ask which kid is which but they don't need ID.

All you need is her medical insurance card in case she needs any care and numbers her parents will be at all times, like cells. You can take a letter allowing you to get care for her but it isn't absolutely necessary. The medical facility can call for permission and if it is a real emergency they will treat anyway. But having the insurance card is what really makes life easier.

Thanks for your suggestions. We had already thought about the medical permission, but I like the comprehensive approach of including all of the other information on the letter. We just want to be especially careful about transporting a minor who's not ours across several state lines.

Why? Unless the parents plan to charge you with kidnapping there is nothing to worry about. LOL

No one cares, especially the airlines or TSA, it isn't their job.

What you say makes sense Hannathy. We typically don't over worry about things, but we're so excited about introducing her to The World that we don't want anything to go wrong.
