Can anyone offer some tips/suggestions for what to do first and what fast passes to get when the parks open? There will be my wife, our 3 year old daughter and me. Our 3 year old is not quite 40" tall so my wife and I will have to use the switch passes for the rides that she is too short for (Screaming, Sorin', Splash and Space Mountains, Indiana Jones, Matterhorn, RSR and TOT).

We are getting to our hotel (GCH) at about noon on Tuesday May 20th. We have ADRs for Ariel's at 4:30. DLP closes at 9 and DCA closes at 8.

On May 21st DLP 9-9 and DCA 8-9 (EMH).

On May 22nd DLP 8-9 (EMH and MM) and DCA 9-9

On May 23rd DLP and DCA 6am for 24 hours

We have ADRs for breakfast at the Plaza on Friday May 23rd. The plan is to get there as early as we can (possibly 6 am) and ride Pirate's and Small World since these two rides will be closed the other days that we are there.

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

I think it depends a little bit on your DD and how long she can wait in line, what rides she likes, etc.

We wenr this week with my 3yo DD who is also not 40" yet. We did not do any riderswap with her though bc she would have gotten really upset not getting to go on a ride we were in line for (esp since we had 4yo DS too), and plus at this age she cannot really wait more than 15 mins in line. And yes you can get fastpasses to avoid long lines but you can really only get one per time window. And some of them (like Star Tours) we still had to wait 20 mins even with a fast pass.

My DD really wanted to ride the Dumbos but we saw that the wait for that was typically at least 50 minutes, even less than an hour after opening. So yesterday (Wed, non EMH day) we were at rope drop just to get on that first, and I think it was just a 10 min wait.

DD also liked both carousels (the Triton one inDCA too) but we found the wait for those to be always pretty short (10 mins or less) so id save that for the afternoon.

In our case, we rented a stroller and kids always just napped in there (for us, it made things soo much easier..we were at the parks from rope drop to closing and didnt go back to hotel at all)..and while kids napped DH and I could just chill or do the fun rides. The single rider lines are much shorter wait and you don't have to worry about getting a fastpass time etc. Dh did the single rider line in Matterhorn like at 2pm and he only had to wait like 5 minutes. So I'd totally use that to go on the more popular roller coasters.

Oh and I should add, on a day you start at DCA I would have someone.be the "runner" to get faspasses for RSR. The fastpasses run out fairly quickly and the wait for that gets to be 120min later in the day. So i would get fastpasses for RSR first thing at rope drop for DCA...that is what we did Monday. i hung back with thw stroller and kids and DH went ahead with our tickets to get in line for RSR fastpasses. We were able to get return time of 1230-130.

After getting RSR fps we got World of Color fps..there was almost no line for that though.

My husband and I go with just our 1-year-old, and we use rider swap a lot. That said, we will use single rider instead if we can, so we honestly didn't use a lot of FPs last time, not as many as I thought. A few personal notes from memory:

-I don't quite understand the previous poster not using rider swap because her LOs would be unhappy to not ride a ride they were waiting in. With rider swap, the kids would never wait in line. The kids actually don't really have to know the other parent is going on a ride. My DH would just ask for a rider swap card outside the ride from the CM and we'd go do other things while he went on, and vice versa. Sometimes the CM would need to see me as the "other rider" (we could wave from a distance, we found), but usually they just handed over the card to him. (I could be misunderstanding the last poster, though.)

-The single rider line for RSR is unpredictable. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it is long-ish. I'd get a FP for this if you really want to do it. But it also does't count against your FP totals, so there's no reason not to get them if you get there early in the day.

-WOC FP also doesn't count toward your current/total FPs. Based on advice, we waited til around 11am to get ours, and we got in the middle section. We got there around 10mins before showtime, and while we had a fine place to see the show, we probably should have gone a little earlier to get really good spots, even with the FP (since they are by color coded area).

-I wouldn't (and didn't) bother with FP for California Screamin (which we love). The SRL there was almost non-existent, in part because it's actually VERY hard to find (ask a CM). The DH and I would go one after the other, over and over again with hardly any wait at all. We'd take our son to the viewing area to watch the other person "take off" and then we'd tag the other person in and go again!

-If the Matterhorn is your thing, I would recommend getting a FP instead of Single Rider. The SRL is PAINFULLY slow and frustrating on there, in my experience. (Obviously, the previous poster had a different experience, though, so it could be luck of the draw.)

-For reasons I don't remember now (I think they shut down for a time?) my husband did Indiana Jones via single rider, and I did it via FP at a different time. They ended up being around the same wait (20mins). Also, DH said the single rider line skips some of the cool queue stuff, if that matters to you.

-There are ways to use the rider swap WITH FP to your advantage. In short: You can both get a FP for a ride, and then use the rider swap to basically get two more FPs. We did this a few times on rides we love, like TOT. DH would go with his FP and get a rider swap card, while I fed the DS or walked around. (We love the bench area where the Red Car Trolley stops next to TOT for snacking and people watching!) When he was done, I could go back on with the rider swap. Then we could use my FP and do the same thing again.

Alternatively, it can allow you to hold more than one FP. So you could get a FP for TOT and do the rider swap, and also have a FP for Soarin at the same time. Here's a blog post that explains it well: http://blog.touringplans.com/2010/12/17/fastpasses-and-the-rider-exchange-a-powerful-combination-2/

I think TP has the BEST and most useful FP advice overall, so I would definitely read through all of what they have to say: http://touringplans.com/disneyland/fastpass

Thanks for the info.

At WDW we have also used my daughters ticket to get a FP for an adult ride to use after she left the park with her grandmother. :goodvibes

Is there a list of rides with single rider lines? Can you get in the SRL and get a swap pass at that time or do you have to get in the main line?

Yes, You can go to the CM at the attraction, get the RS pass and then the first person can head to the SR line.
Rides with SR that I can recall (there may be more)...
RSR
Goofy's Sky School
CA Screamin
GRR
Matterhorn
IJA

Here are the Single Riders: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_rider#Disneyland_Park

And while I think you CAN get a swap pass on a SRL, I don't know that it would matter, because I think with the rider swap pass you get put into the SRL anyway if you are by yourself. So it's just the same as both just riding single rider.

....I could definitely be wrong on this one, though.

In Disneyland the ride that Fastpasses usually work best for is Splash Mountain - lines there can be very long up to two hours, and Fastpasses cut almost the entire line. You'll find that other Fastpasses don't cut the whole line, for example Indy only lets you past the people you can see lining up outside the temple, and the line inside can be really long and slow moving. The same goes for Space Mountain. Big Thunder Fastpasses get you nearly to the front. So if you can only get a few, I'd go for Splash and BTMR and aim to do Indy early. The Tomorrowland rides tend to ease off last thing in the evening if you can manage to stay up that late.

A previous poster recommended getting a FP for Matterhorn instead of going SR. It should be noted that FP is NOT available for Matterhorn. We love going SR on Matterhorn and the wait has been considerably shorter in our experience.
