the last 2 years we have had autograph books (that I make before we go). I bought plain backpacks for this year to have autographed. the books get forgotten and take up space in bags-if they wear the backpacks with their own stuff in it and just have it signed with a sharpie hanging from their bags then they will have their things to be signed and their bags in one spot...

do you think this is a good idea? problems with it? thanks in advance for any advice about this

I think it would be a great idea, :thumbsup2 the only problem you may run into is that the bag may be difficult to sign. Some of the characters may have a hard time holding on to the bag and depending on the style of the bag the material may be loose, making it harder.

I must admit I like the idea getting the characters to sign something other than a book. I read on another thread, someone had a pillow case signed and made a pillow out of it when they got home. I recall them saying they used "needlepoint rings" ( I think thats what they are called) to keep the pillowcase tight for the characters to sign.

Have fun on your trip.:goodvibes

I think it's a great idea as well. Just a heads up though you may want to do a bleed test somewhere inconspicuous to see if the marker runs on the fabric. We use sharpies on the inside of our kids LL Bean backpacks and the markers bleed a bit.

so now i am questioning if i really want to do that. two more bags to carry around all day does not sound like fun. anything else we can use to have signed-hmmmm

We get grey full zip hooded sweatshirts signed. You can tie them around your waist and wear them in the air conditioned places if you are cold. We use the same shirt each trip (so you don't have to get Mickey's autograph every time you come). So far, we have 100 autographs.

good idea-have you been in the summer? i am alittle concerned about august and sweatshirts

We're doing a few things for autographs on our trip in Feb (kids will be 8, 6.5, and turn 5 while there). We're going to tote around the new Encyclopedia of Animated Characters to get most of the autographs in (this will be "mine") and each kid will have a plain white pillowcase to collect their autographs. On my dd's b-day we'll also be doing the princess breakfast so for that day will have a picture frame mat (size is 8x10, holds a 5x7 picture) and will have it signed by all of the princesses we see and put her favorite princess picture from the day inside.

We're also debating on bringing plain 4x6 index cards (or generic themed 4x6 cards) to have signed to slip into a photo album afterward, but haven't decided for sure if we'll do that yet.

My kids love to look through books and photo albums so I figured the autographs in that format will work well for us. The pillowcases I thought would be something special and neat for them to have in their rooms to remember the trip by.

We went in early September. It worked okay although it may get sweaty wrapped around your waist if you are warm blooded... we had a backpack to stuff them in. A long sleve t-shirt would also work and be lighter (or a regular t-shirt if you don't mind carrying it).

The characters will not sign anything you are actually wearing, so keep that in mind.

To autograph fabric, these are the instructions we use:
1. Wash and dry the item first to remove sizing (no fabric softener)
2. Get autographs using a black Sharpie permanent marker (the characters love the retractable ones because they are longer and don't have caps that need to be removed, held and replaced)
3. Iron the shirt on high heat (as high as the fabric will take) with a damp towel over top of the autographs to set the "stain"
4. You can wear and wash as usual.

LOVE..LOVE...LOVE the idea about the autographs on the photo mat. THANK YOU!! Hope you don't mind if I "borrow" that for our next trip. Would the characters mind signing that?? I've only used the autograph books so just want to make sure I don't run into any troubles. Many thanks again.

I love the idea of a pillowcase. My girls are so excited about that! They have autograph books, but we never end up looking at them.

The picture idea for the princesses is a great one as well. I might have to think about that one, since we're eating at CRT for lunch one day!!

One other thing that we're thinking of doing, but I'm not sure just yet. I want to make "around the world" t-shirts from one of the many wonderful designs on the DISigns board here. Then, on the back, we're thinking of asking the CMs at the kidcot mask stops to sign them (like they've done our passports in the past). My girls do not want to do another passport, and although they are cute, we don't really do much with them after they are home. Maybe just a "hello from XXcountryXX" This way, we would have shirts to wear and remember our trip!

I also like the idea of using a "needle point circle" to hold fabric for signatures!

GREAT THREAD :)

We're doing the photo mats too. The sweatshirt sounds like a good idea though too. We're going in Dec so they won't be too hot to tote around. :)

OP:I wouldn't want to carry around two more bags. And, I cannot imagine a 3 and 5 year old carrying around backpacks all day.

Love the idea of a pillow case! However, I've read that folks recommend taking a hoop (like for needlepoint) to have a good place for the characters to sign. Sounds like a hassle to me.

We have a mini clipboard I picked up at wally world for 1.99. Just need to fold the pillowcase tightly over and then slide the clipboard in, playing with smaller scrap fabric it seemed to work pretty well.

I had a friend who took one of the old Polaroid cameras with her and snapped pictures of her child with the characters...and then had them sign the photo.

It looked great in the album, I just don't know how much of a hassle it is...or if they even HAVE the Polaroid cameras anymore. :3dglasses

love the idea of signing the book next to their pictures, like the encyclopedia or something. I'm interested what the encyclopedia pages of that book are like. Are the characters one per page and is there spots good for them to sign? Or anyone have other similar ideas like that book?

Great Thread!

We just returned a few weeks ago and DD6 and DS4 each had a pillowcase that they used for autographs.

They turned out adorable. I'll try and post a pic if I can. We used fabric markers instead of Sharpies and did not have any "bleeding" issues. The characters did not have any problems using them either. i even had a couple of CMs and Photopass people ask me what kind of marker I was using as it was turning out so nice and vibrant!!!

Here are some pics:

Have fun with it and have a magical trip!!!:wizard:

Wow! These are really fun ideas! I really love the idea of fabric markers. Those would be so handy! I know someone mentioned some problems with backpacks, but what about canvas totes? I see blank ones at craft stores all the time, and autographs seem like a fun way to decorate them.

These are fabulous ideas... in the past, I have not been a fan of the autograph books, for the following reasons: they get lost, forgotten after a couple years the kids don't care etc... not to mention they are time consuming, I like to get a snap shot and run...
BUT... I have to say I love, love, LOVE the pillow case, and I could Portion off some squares (like at the corners) and write "Do not sign here" in washable marker to add iron photos of the characters with the kids later!!!
love laundry markers!

did you bring a clipboard or something for them to sign on or where the characters able to sign with no problem
