For our anniversary we planned a week at the Animal Kingdom Lodge (we scored the concierge level at Jambo House :thumbsup2) with a long weekend to follow at Vero Beach. Unfortunately, we had to travel to Oregon just last week for a family funeral, and now we need to shorten our trip. What do we do about our Vero reservation? We know the points are already "gone", but it seems like such a waste. Anybody ever been in a similar position? What did you do?

You can try to rent the reservation.

You can cancel the VB part of the reservation (unless you are scheduled to check-in there today) and the points will go into holding status. You would have to use them to book a trip within 60 days of arrival, and must use them by the end of your use year, but SSR or OKW would likely have some availability for that...depending upon your use year.

Sorry for your loss. I would call MS. Sometimes with extenuating circumstances you might be able to cancel the reservation without the points going into holding. But then they might say that is what trip insurance is for.

Normally, if you are within 30 days or less from your reservation and you cancel, then your points will go into holding. And you can use these points until they expire at end of the UY, they can't be banked. But you must make the reservation using the holding points no earlier than 60 days before the reservation begins. Sometimes people will use the points make a RCI reservation because that reservation can be a year out.

A lot of good suggestions. Basically, you can (1) rent your reservation, or (2) cancel your reservation and either (a) use your points later, (b) rent your points, or (c) trade it for an RCI reservation.

There are several places / companies / individuals who offer to help you rent your points (for a fee) if you don't want to bother with renting it yourself.

You don't mention your use year. Would you be able to use the points later if they go into holding? If not, a holiday weekend Vero reservation might rent quickly. It's worth a shot, and better than losing the points.

Option 2c won't work because the points would be in holding. 2b could be done, but it would be difficult to find a renter with the flexibility needed for holding account booking restrictions.
