Hi all,

Need some advice. I'll be booking a trip for next year starting next Monday at my home resort of AKV. I was all set to just book a two bedroom as we are taking DIL's with us. Last Friday they mention they may not stay all seven days but won't know for a while. So now I'd have a two bedroom for two people for part of the trip. If I book a one bedroom and a studio separately it ends up being about 50 extra points and then they'll probably end up staying the whole time...any advice?

Thanks!

Tracy

There are a couple of additional points to consider here.

If you are booking a 2 bedroom and your guests leave early, if you are taking the DDP you will still have to pay for their meals for the entire length of stay.

If you book separately a one bedroom and studio, they may be near each other or they may be far apart. They will not necessarily be connected either.

I would explain to the relatives that you are making a commitment here and you need to know up front if they will be staying or not. Usually some type of financial commitment helps them to understand that you will have penalties for changing DVC ressies down the road. You run the risk of not being able to change the room(s) later and if they back out last minute, well you know how that goes...

Otherwise, be prepared to be stuck with too large accomodations, or points in a holding account or maybe even forfeited.

Good luck -

I would not book without a committment from the parties involved. If you aren't particular about needing to be in the same unit, then go ahead and book the two rooms seperately, but know that it WILL cost extra points. The other option is to book the 2 bedroom and take your chances on a 1 bedroom being available if they decide to cancel. Another option is to find someone else to go in their place, should they back out.

A third option would be to book a 1 bedroom AND a 2 bedroom. Cancel the one you don't need. The key points here would be that you have to have enough points to pull this off without borrowing AND they have to firmly make up their minds before you are 30 days out so you won't get stuck with points in holding. Also, this only works if the trip is not so late in the use year that you can't bank the points you don't use. A pain? Sadly, yes, but a way to handle it. Been there, done that, afraid we're about to do it again.:sad2:

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the advice. Since my DIL's have taken us twice, I really don't want to give them the ultimatium as this is kind of a pay back trip. I also don't have enough points to hold both the 2 bedroom and then a 1 bedroom and studio.

I think we may just end up going with the 2 bedroom and if they only want to stay a few days, I'll then invite my parents down for the rest of the week.

I would just book 2 savannah view studios. One ressie can be altered if needed and each couple will have the privacy of their own quarters. When/if I was asked why the studios, I would explain the "problem."

It is definitely cheaper points wise to book a 2-br versus a 1-br and a studio over the same period. I would explain the situation to them to see what they say. Hopefully they won't cancel on you completely, but if they are DVCers, then they should understand your situation.

Bobbi - I thought about this but DH NEEDS (his words not mine :lmao: ) the spa tubs this trip - after all "that's why we bought DVC" Ummm and I thought we bought it just to enjoy Dinsey more often and a little cheaper :goodvibes So we would need at least the one bedroom and a studio.

I think we will be going with the two bedroom as I bet over the next year they decide to stay the whole time. DIL's are not DVCers, but DH is willing to place a bet they might try and find a small contract through resale to join once we take them. They LOVE Disney and actually travel there a few times a year.

Thanks everyone for your advice...we may end up with a place too big for a couple of days but it will probably work out in the end. Now I just have my fingers crossed that we'll be able to get the reservation!

Regarding the "spa" in AKV right now. From what the pictures have shown, in Jambo house, it's really a tub, normal size with jets, so the "spa" may be a disappointment. I think someone (maybe Doc?) came back from AKV 1 bedroom and said they would be waiting for Kadini for the amenities.

Hi Bobbi,

I noticed that as well just looking at the layouts as all the other "spa" tubs seemed a little bigger in all the other DVC's. I think DH will just be happy with the normal tub sized one as we don't have one at home. :goodvibes

I like the shower separate from the tub.

so don't participate like the 1-bedroom at Jambo House. that say the rest of the unit is lovely. visited some new friends while I was there. they stayed in a 1-bedroom.

you might try to convience him to go with a studio and just use the resort's spa - they do have 2 one on each side of the swimming pool.

I understand where he's coming from. I didn't spend thousands on DVC to get a regular hotel room with a kitchenette. The extra ammenities sold me (after staying in an OKW 2 bedroom I was spoiled).

Thanks again for the help and advice. I ended up going with the two bedroom for the whole trip...I'm sure we'll be able to find someone to join us if his parents end up leaving early.
