We're staying onsite at Universal for a few days in Jan and want to hit seaworld and the I-drive area also. I need suggestions of a resort near SW with a nice pool area and playground area for DD-5? Any suggestions?

The Renaissance is literally right across the street from SeaWorld. Its a good hotel that should give you what you're looking for. You could also try the Peabody, The Crowne Plaza on Universal Blvd, Rosen Shingle Creek, or even the JW Marriott or Ritz Carlton. Any of those will give you a good pool, etc.

I recommend Marriott's Horizons. It is about 1/2 mile from Sea World. We stayed there in June and July and loved it. It's a great location- close to International Drive and I-4.

The Renaissance is nice and it is so close. Across the street from Horizons is my favorite, Marriott's Cypress Harbour villas. Plenty of playgrounds as well as three beautiful swimming pools. Plus they have countless other activities too, such as board games to borrow (they are complimentary), ice cream socials, a game room, pool tables, basketball courts, and for a small fee there are bikes and boats. ;)

The JW Marriott is right down the street from SeaWorld and has an awesome lazy river pool with one area zero entry. They have kids activities everyday, playground and great service and friendly employees.

This is the one I was going to reccommend. It is, literally, right across the street. Well, more like right across the parking lot.

Hilton Grand Vacation Club is right across from SW too. We had a beautiful 2 BR condo with big Jacuzzi in master bath. Loved it and would def. stay there again. :lovestruc

We just stayed at the Renaissance a few weeks ago. Clean, right across the street with beautiful views of Sea World from our balconey :cloud9:

I highly recommend this hotel if you will be spending time at Sea World.

Residence Inn is also very close to Sea World and has a pretty decent free breakfast. Clean rooms - nothing luxurious, but decent and pretty roomy.

I second HGVC Sea World (I guess I'm a little partial because we own there :goodvibes ).

It's right up the alley of a 5 year old. They have the Captain Finn Kids Club where she can participate in several activities, ice cream socials by the pool, a decent poolside snack bar, dive-in movies and the pools are beautiful (especially the ones by the clubhouse).
When my kids were around that age they did the "behind the scenes" Seaworld tour thru the kids club, it was $25 and took about 5 hours. They did a craft, had lunch, then took a van with the club counselors over to Sea World and went "behind the scenes" at the stingray exhibit and dolphin exhibit. They loved it.

All great suggestions. We've stayed at Cypress Harbor, Hilton Grange and Horizons. Loved all 3; would go back to Horizons with a 5 year old. Fun water features for the little ones.
