We already have the Southwest Visa (for our air miles to Disney!)and Discover card (love cash back!). But it is time to make our first college tuition payment and the school does NOT take either of these cards ......just MasterCard or Amex. So we are hunting for a new card...no sense in paying these big tuition bills and not getting at least a little something back!

We don't really need another air miles card as DD is only 2.5 hours away and we rarely fly other than to Disney...which is on indefinite hold until both kids are out of college. Hotel rewards might be okay, but DH usually racks up enough of these with work travel. I'm looking for very practical rewards like cash back...preferably without a yearly fee! Any suggestions?

Before you charge, make sure the school doesn't charge a premium for using a credit card, many do.

So odd taking MC and not Visa. I've. Not heard of that before.

Me neither! I was shocked that I couldn't make her initial deposit on my SWA Visa.... And so disappointed! I had visions of racking up loads of points and buying airline tix for my parents for Christmas! :( I'm here at the college orientation right now and will ask if they charge a service fee or anything like that. It wasn't listed on any of our paperwork so far that I've seen, but maybe I missed it...........P

I know my daughter's college (state university) allows you to pay your tuition bill with a credit card but it was not worth the fee to charge it to just get the rewards - it would have been a step backwards meaning I would be paying more just to get a cash back or reward incentive.

I am in the same boat. We leave for freshman orientation this afternoon and I was just reading over some information last night and found out the same thing - that they don't take Visa. I had visions of racking up points on our Disney Visa, but I guess won't be happening. Bummer.

I was just thinking about the need for a Mastercard as well. I guess I'd better ask about those service fees too. I don't mind paying with a check, but paying online with a cc is just so much easier.

Hope you are having fun at your DD's school! We are looking forward to it. Should be interesting as we are staying overnight in dorms (yes, even me, Mom)! Though not it in the same buildings.

I have a Chase Freedom MC and you can get cash back or a credit to your statement. I just got a $90 statement credit and never paid a penny in interest.
