Need a hotel for one night...

We are flying in to LAX from overseas in July, and need a hotel to stay in for one night before driving to AZ. We will be two adults and four kids. Need advice on what areas to look in for a family friendly hotel. (I don't know what the good/bad neighborhoods are.) Hopefully close to a grocery store or target etc so we can buy supplies for the road trip. Would like to not pay $$$$.

Any suggestions?
