Need a Flat Stanley from Overseas ASAP

No offence to anyone, and not to take over the thread, but how stupid of a project is Flat Stanley?! I mean, what is the kid learning here - that his/her mom is going on the Disboards to find strangers to pose with a stupid cut out???? If a teacher wants their students to learn about another country / state - how about teaching them about it!!!! Maybe I'm missing something, I don't know, just seems like a real time waister to me. JMHO

PS - No offence to the OP what so ever - you are just trying your best to help your child with their school project!

I think it is hilarious that you criticize an educational project. Have you checked your spelling and grammar lately? The (scottland)reference was priceless.

In my class we do fluffy monkey. He goes home with a kid and the class camera for the weekend. The kids do stuff with him and take there own pictures. We also sent him overseas once. I chose another teacher I knew and it was very educational. The kids learned all about the other country AND they loved writing daily emails to our monkey (and getting them back). It was cool! Cant wait to do it this school year

Because you have no clue how the child reacts and learns from it!

DS has done Flat Stanley and a Bear Project that was similar. The people that Stanley and the Bear were sent to were wonderful about taking pictures and explaining what they were getting to see and do which gave the kids insight into that area.

The kids were thrilled to get mail back (who doesnt like to get mail) and then the teachers had them read what was sent back and then they went to the map and charted where he had traveled to.

Gee what is wrong with making learning fun.

My girls had Flat Stanley in 2nd grade. My oldest girl enjoyed taking him to Epcot, bought him a passport and took him to every country. She had her picture taken with employees holding Stanley and they even addressed the passport to him in thier native language. She had a blast and i enjoyed a day at the park. My younger daughter took hers to blizzard beach for the day. He was the hit of the party with the life guards (and the lazy river) and the rest of the time they did pictures around the camp ground at Disney. This year my youngest daughter is in 2nd grade and it will be her turn. I can't wait to see what she comes up with!

To the original poster: I hope your child has a wonderful time with this!

I am probably too late, but I am in Naples. :yay: Let me know if I can help.

SharpMomofTwo- Sometimes what a local "sees" gives far more insight to a stranger than what a picture from a book can explain. A history book or science book will just show a picture of a lonely Mt Vesuvius and tell you that Naples is a closeby city. To a kid, they would probably say "boring!". Let Flat Stanley stand in Downtown Naples with a giant Vesuvius in the background of the picture and the visual makes you realize just how big a volcano can be and just how close Naples is to it. This opens up many doors for questions such as "Why do people live so close?". My husband works 5 miles from the volcano. When Mt St Helens blew, people 3-4 times further away died. It becomes a lesson in geography, culture, and science -all from one picture. A picture of Flat Stanley next to a scooter makes kids interested because they would think it would be cool to drive one of those to school everyday. The picture could open discussion on the environment and modes of transportation. If I got the picture of him on the scooter with a family consisting of a mom on the back, dad up front, infant between mom and dad and the 3 year old standing on the foot rest holding onto the handlebars in front of dad (none wearing a helmet), it becomes a lesson on safety. yes, this is a common sight. Make them see that life is not the same everywhere else.

These pictures are not the same as those boring family vacation snapshots that people hate being forced to look at. Most of these kids have never been outside their own city. Seeing where their Flat Stanley and everyone elses Flat Stanley has been can be extremely exciting. It is also a way for the kids to interact with each other and form bonds. Maybe 2 kids who would have never spoken to each other both had Flat Stanleys who visited the same place and had nearly identical pictures. Now they have something in common and reason to be closer friends. You never know.

DS9 did a similar project in first grade, that asked for postcards. He was the only kid with a postcard from Louisiana (that my mom sent). His teacher had a GIANT map and put all of the postcards up on it.

When I still worked in the gaming industry, my department would receive Stanley requests on occasion. I would take Stanley home and then stop on my way into work the next day, take the pictures and then send a short letter and a copy of our company's annual report. In three years, I probably did this 4 - 5 times and I got thank you notes on maybe three of them! It was fun.

Here's one of the Stanley pictures I took, with the property shaped like a pyramid:
