Basically, all I need is a loaf of bread and a package of cheese. I won't have a car and I don't think I want to use any of the delivery places; since, I really only want these two items. I've been lurking on the restaurant boards asking about this and buying it at the food courts. It seems the bread would be okay, but getting a slice of cheese may not be so easy. I figured since cheese is used in hamburgers I may luck out, but others seem to think you can't buy just the cheese; because, there's no way to ring up a goofy item like this at the cash register.

I heard there may be some DVC gift shops that handle these items; can anyone steer me in the right direction, here? I would love to know if the Beach Club gift shop would be one such place?

I have my reasons for needing this and I would appreciate your help finding a gift shop that would be good.

You would have better luck across the water at Boardwalk. You can buy a loaf of bread and a small pack of sliced cheese.

Bete--I posted on your previous thread, too.

You might want to explain the concerns you have with your Mom and her eating/food issues due to her illness. You might end up getting some creative solutions to keep your Mom well fed.

The folks on the disABILITIES boards are great!

Agreed.

I am gluten free, soy free, nut free, meat free, and vegetable oil free. I've gotten lots of tips regarding what items might be good for me to have, or at least where to look to find this information. There are photos around the internet if you google "DVC Convenience Store". You can kinda see in the refrigerated doors (sort of) what types of items are available. At the Boardwalk we have had luck finding BIG jugs of water to take back to the room- much cheaper than buying a bottle of water every day!!

But, we're also renting a car this trip to make our stay a little easier. You can bet that after we check into Pop and get our fridge plugged in (and filled with ice to get it to a cool temperature pretty quickly) that we're going to go to Publix to get items for us to eat. Being GF, SF, NF and MF is NOT easy. We know exactly what brands of things we can eat, and our diet IS medical need, so we get the fridge for free.

I checked the Screen Door order form and they list velveeta cheese slices and Arnold bread.

The bread might be problematic, but you can probably pack the cheese, unless you need just huge quantities. If you are concerned about keeping it chilled, pack it in a plastic bag with a gel ice pack and bury it in the middle of a suitcase for insulation. That bag would need to be checked, because of TSA regulations, but if you just pack the cheese, you can put it in carry-on. Chill it well ahead of time and, again, pack it in the middle of your clothes for insulation, and it should stay cool for quite a while.

I have done similar things before to take goodies to a family get-together, including velveeta cheese and cream cheese, and there has never been a problem. I do use a gel pack, put in it's own baggie just in case of rupture, though.

ETA: I think there is a convience store at the Fort Wilderness camping grounds, which probably has bread and cheese as well. You can get there on Disney transportation.

You are likely to find bread and cheese slices at DVC gift shops. Because the one and two bedroom villas and grand villas have full kitchens, those shops have more than just simple snack items in their gift shops. Bread will be easy to find and I know we have seen cheese slices at OKW because grilled cheese sandwiches are simple and popular quick meals.

You can find bread and cheese at Ft Wilderness at the Meadows Trading Post and the Settlement Trading Post.

For some reason I thought you could buy two slices of bread (packaged in a plastic baggie) at the Pop food court. I swear my picky DD got it to make herself a sandwich. Although maybe she just sweet talked the chef into giving her plain bread.

This is a great tip! What we're doing in terms of bringing cold items with us is the following (in our carryon, on the plane):

*1 week before the trip, freeze grapes (off the stem).
*The night before we leave, pack frozen grapes in little baggies and keep in freezer.
*Right before we get in the car to go to the airport, pack our 'cold items' (cut up fruit and veggies, hard cheese, frozen gluten free bread in baggies (that needs to stay cold or else it goes all stale) in an insulated cooler packed with the frozen grape baggies. You can also keep your baggie of liquids in here if you have vitamins or something that need refrigerated (like fish oil, probiotics, etc). The frozen grapes serve like 'ice packs', since you can't take ice through security. Be sure to pack some empty ziplock baggies in the cooler as well, along with some plastic utensils.
*After going through the security line, go to Starbucks or some sort of food establishment. Buy water to have on the plane, and ask for 2 large cups of ice. Pour the ice into the extra packed ziplock baggies to help keep the items cold during the flight. Feel free to eat the grapes now. :goodvibes

For someone who has VERY RESTRICTIVE food allergies, this tip works pretty well :goodvibes. If you want to pack bread in your checked luggage, the easiest thing I have found to do is pack the loaf in ziplocks, 2 slices per baggie. This packs a little better and doesn't get too smooshed if you put the slices between layers of clothing.

and I think I'll pack my own. Not too long ago I got the WOW interchangeable food container system.

This allows you to actually secure and seal a whole loaf of bread. I really have nothing to lose to try and I can always get bread at a resort somehow, someway, if need be if it spoils.

I'm going to do the same for frozen cheese. I have a larger insulated lunchbag that will help with this item. I think I will add cream cheese, too. I'll have a container for the food and the insulated lunch bag for added security.

It's going to be a hassle trying to get these food supplies; because, I'll be pushing a manual wheelchair and I don't really feel like taking any extra trips anywhere for these items. I'll make it work.

I agree with a previous poster that you can get bread as two slices for 69 cents at POP. I was trying to be economical by trying to get a whole loaf.

I appreciate everyone's comments and you convinced me I can make this work from home in my luggage.
