I am just starting to look at places for Feb 2014. I need a 3 bedroom with no cancellation fee - or withing 3 days. I am currently looking at Vista Cay - I can get a 3 bedroom for 8 nights and am able to cancel up to 72 hours before for about $1400.00. This is due to my mom having some health issues so we need to be able to be flexible - who knows could change it to December if we get all the clear!! Any other places come to anyone's mind?? Hard to find 3 bedroom and 72 hours cancellation ! THanks

When I was looking, I only saw "non-refundable" deposits. Sorry, that might be the norm...happy hunting.

If you're not going right around the holiday, you might be better off just making a reservation closer in. Anything with generous cancellation policies will likely be more expensive than your typical rental.

Another option is to buy trip insurance. Generally trip insurance will pay any non-refundable costs in the event of an illness of an immediate family member...whether or not they were planning to accompany you on your trip.

I've used trip insurance twice where my FIL and later MIL had medical problems that caused a trip cancellation. No problems either time.

If you take that route, just be sure you understand what is covered and what is not.

Second this. With most 3bdrm's being condo's or Timeshares, and the way they operate, It will be very hard to find something with an extremely generous cancelation policy without also having a large premium on your rental cost.

You might find that it's easier and cheaper to find a decent location with a less generous cancelation policy and pay for the trip insurance for it, than what you'd be able to get with a place that meets your cancelation policy needs.

Thanks for the suggestions and that is what I am coming up with for the insurance - the pre-existing condition. I am praying that she flies thru this with flying colors and by Feb - will feel really good. But - she is nervous about booking anything that cannot be cancelled.

there are policies that will cover preexisting conditions, You just need to make sure you pick one that would cover it. sometimes it's an extra-cost option on a standard policy.

It might also be worth checking what the definition of a "pre-existing condition" is on some of the policies. For example.... A chronic illness is technically a pre-existing condition, however some policies won't consider it one if it's not in an "active" state at the time of purchasing the policy, so you would still be covered if it flared up and caused a problem at the time of your trip.

Try looking at a site such as insuremytrip.com. I used them earlier this year to find a policy that would cover my upcoming honeymoon Disney cruise. The online chat help was extremely knowledgeable and helpful since hurricane coverage was a HUGE factor for me due to the time of my cruise, and major storms like that are often excluded under "act of god" clauses.

We have used Travel Guard for years. I believe they are the largest of this type of insurer. One of our cancellations was due to a pre-existing condition with my FIL, but it was fully covered. The other cancellation was an unexpected accident by MIL.

But check the terms of any insurance coverage because different companies write policies differently and policies also change over time.
