We have a package in July at the Poly and have our magic bands customized. We just recently decided to add on one night at the beginning of our trip at an All-Stars resort. It's a room only reservation.

Do we have to customize both sets of magic bands? I prefer to just have one. I'm worried that if we don't customize the first set for the All-Stars resort, the other set won't have our magical express information on them. I don't want to show up at the airport and find out that they don't have our information.

I'm assuming you have one MyDisneyExperience Account... both reservations are linked... your Magical Express information showing?

The Magic Bands, any and every you gather... are all linked together, to that one account.

It doesn't matter If you customize your All Star MB to a Blue one... and your Polynesian MB to a Red one... both bands will give you access to Magical Express, both will open your door to the All Stars AND Polynesian, both will have your ticket information on them.

The Magic Bands are not resort specific... they simply give access to whatever your MyDisneyExperience itinerary shows.

You can add new reservations to you existing Magic Bands.

Just to clarify, nothing gets added to any Magic Band. Just as typhoonlagooner stated the Magic Bands allow you access to whatever entitlements (tickets, resort room, dining credits, ME, etc) you have linked to your MDE account. So any and all active Magic Bands will have access to all the entitlements.

Great - thanks! So if our magic bands are associated with out MDE account and not reservations - why do they give you a new set with every resort reservation? Glad to know I can just customize one set!

Nobody knows why they give you a set for every reservation. Some people like it and have like 5 or 6 different MBs that are all different and depending on what they're wearing that day will decide which MB to wear.

They give you a new set at each reservation because the room access is not automatically imprinted onto multiple sets of bands. So, basically, it's like getting a new room when you change hotels. If you prefer to use a different band then the one coded to your room, you can go to the front desk & have it linked to your room. This is also true if you buy a special magic band in the parks. They will link it to your MDE account right away, so that you can immediately use it to access all of your tickets & reservations. But, if you want that new band to open your room, you have to swing by the front desk of your hotel to have it linked there.

I have never had to go down and have a MB coded to a room! I routinely travel with up to four or five MBs....have never had an issue swapping them out on a daily basis. I've used the same MB, from a trip 2 years ago, for the three different resorts I stayed at on one trip. So basically, that MB worked for 5 different resorts, over two trips!
Only once have we had an issue, and that was at POR. For some reason, the CM at checkin took my dd's MB. We had moved over from BWVs, so already had bands. She said she had to 'activate' it. Ummmm, nope. That MB had issues for the rest of the day. She couldn't get into the room, it was wonky at the parks. We finally stopped at Guest Services and talked to them. They took the band and did something and it was fine for the next three days. But they did tell us that the resort CMs didn't need to do anything with them!

Basically, a MB is merely a liason between you and your MDE account. Nothing is stored on it....it just allows the system to access your account. Which is why you can use multiple bands. I've even seen people with them on both wrists...they say it's easier doing FP+ that way!!!

Well, very basically, your Magic Band is your room key.

You'd expect a hotel to give you a room key for each room/reservation, right ?

How silly would that be if a resort told their guests "you've stayed with us in the past, we assume that you've kept your room key, please use it as we won't give you a new one" ?
of course your stays are back to back, but what difference does it make ? Those are still separate stays, each of which requires a room key

Ok - I just went back to confused. If they're like room keys and we have separate ones for separate stays....that would make me think I do need both sets.

No worries. Yes, they are your room key. It's just automatic on Disneys part. You make a resort reservation, they automatically send you a MB for that resort. Everything is in your MDE...which is accessed using your MB. I use various MBs during each stay...some from earlier trips, with stays at completely different resorts. A MB is not resort specific.

I've got maybe 20 of them now.

You should be able to use ANY magic band assigned to you on any trip, interchangeably. I could still use the first one I got, if I wanted to. You do NOT need to have two sets.

I just returned from a split stay at GF and FW. GF was room only, FW was MYW with PH. Had a magic band for each. FW magic band did everything but let me in any parks. Room door, charging, FPP, all worked fine. To get into the park, I had to use a card. 4th trip in a row this has happened to me. They actually had me talk to an IT person, who said that mde is a "split ticket" and that happens sometimes and they are trying to debug it. I know I posted back in the fall that I've had a problem and I got crucified that it isn't possible. Well, nail me to the cross again.

Tom

Of course it is possible that things could go wrong. But they are supposed to work interchangeably for everything. Mine all work.

Yup. Worded it wrong. We bought the Not So Scary Halloween party separately but it was shown on our bands. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

We haven't been to Disney in almost 2 years so the Magic Band is new to us - are they linked to a certain person or to a family. Say we had 4 magic bands between us could either of us wear any of the 4?

Magic bands are person specific and in fact if you get them directly from Disney, they will have your name imprinted on them. Now that does not mean that someone else could not use them because they certainly could, but the issue would be if you are staying in different rooms with different reservations and one room is on the dining plan and the other is not. Also, the tickets that you enter into your MDE account are assigned to one person so using another persons MB could cause you a problem with the tickets and of course....FP+ are booked on a person by person basis so...

On our trip in October, we bought a Haunted Mansion magic band, an Olaf one & 2 Halloween party ones. Each of them were added either to mine or my son's MDE account on the spot. They instantly worked for FP+ (with really fun results) & park entry. But, they did not open our room when we got back. We would have to go to the front desk & have them added to our room each time before they would open the door. The front desk staff told me that CMs in the parks are never be able to add a room to a new band & it has to be done at the hotel. So, unless all 3 CM's that sold us the bands in 3 different stores on 3 different days coded the bands wrong, & the hotel staff was wrong, I think it's true.

I suppose that old bands, if still linked to your MDE, could be updated with your new room info without going to the front desk. Although I brought my old band along on this trip, I never tried to use it. Something about that thought scares me a little though. Something about having band after band that would open up any room you stay in. You could end up with like 20 different keys floating around for your room. I know the chances that they would fall into the wrong hands & someone would use it to get in your room are extremely remote, but it still creeps me out.

In any case, I think we'd all be wise to make sure we take the band(s) for our current trips/rooms with us each time, even if planning to use an old one most of the time. Although the batteries are supposed to last 2 years, you never know when they'll actually die. It would suck to show up at the park on your 1st morning only to find that band was dead. The delay trying to get a new one worked out with Guest Relations could mess up your schedule for the whole day.
