NBA at Walt Disney World

That ejection was BS!!! I am not going to lie, watching B2B games all day has made 'social distancing' a lot more bearable.

Orlando just wiped the floor with the Bucks, crazy!
Don’t get me started on the Bucks...

Shouldn’t have taken off the last 5 games of the seeding games, Lakers and Bucks. Playoff sports is all about momentum. You had 4 months to take it easy and rest.

With the time off these guys had this is not even the same season. To rest was pointless.

I disagree with both thoughts. They always knew there was a chance the season would resume, if they could find a safe way to finish it. It is the same season & they shouldn't have been taking it easy & resting. They're professionals. They should have kept working, until they knew the season would continue or be cancelled. I've seen many videos of players working hard trying to stay in shape in case they resumed the season. The players that didn't shouldn't get a pass. IMO, the team that wins deserves the championship like any other year.

I think the PP's were referring to the fact that the Bucks and Lakers kind of phoned in their bubble seeding games since they clinched the #1 seeds early on and the rest of the seeding games didn't matter in terms of playoff placement. Because of that, they may not have had the momentum to win their first games as we witnessed yesterday. In his post-game interview last night, Damian Lillard commented that he has been playing play-off games since the moment he walked into the bubble as that intensity of play was the only way the Blazers would even make it to the play-offs and that was really the only reason he was there. It seems that mentality is really paying off now as his team has already been playing at this level since late July. I, too, have seen the videos of the players working out during the shutdown and, I agree, they are professionals and I think most of them kept up on their training as best they could. The funniest one I saw was Matisee Thybulle's video after the Sixers gave him some training equipment including a basketball - however, he didn't have a court to play on so he filmed himself training in his apartment, probably to the chagrin of his neighbors - it's pretty funny!

Given the number of games which didn't break even a million viewers, the NBA is already preparing changes for the upcoming season in December. No idea what the changes will be, but I'm told negotiations are being prepped with the players' association.

Not sure what you can change given the circumstances.

The times of the games need to be changed if viewership is way down. 1:30pm, 3:30pm and even 6:30pm (eastern) on weekdays doesn’t work for fans who are back to work or working from home. But as far as the safety of the players and staff.. the bubble is a proven success.. so I agree that not much else can/should be changed

Then you limit the number of games you can have in a day. There isn’t a great way around that.

I don’t understand how they can plan for the next season considering the anticipated second wave (or continued first) coinciding with flu season. I also can’t see the players being down for another bubble that lasts the entire season.

The viewership in Canada has actually gone up since apparently we’re a basketball country now, but I could see how game times could be an issue. I am still working from home and I’ve got the games going from morning until night. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t find any benefit to even record them since no one cares about spoiling who wins right after it happens. I’d just end up watching highlights on YouTube

This is a pretty good article outlining the current conversations surrounding the next season. Ideas from postponing into January/February to doing regional playing pods (I think, mini-bubbles) utilizing practice courts and having teams rotate from region to region with some time off in between to go home.

It didn't even occur to me that the playing times might be backfiring in terms of viewership. My DS12 is still home from school right now and we've had the TV on from 1:30 pm EST to 11:30 pm EST every day this week. This is the only time he's actually been able to watch every single play-off game! We're enjoying it for now, but of course, that will change when he heads back to school.

Game times are an issue for us - it’s about noon when I finally throw my kids out of the house and ban them from screen time until 8/9pm. We have just wrapped up baseball season - but that had us out of the house 4:30-8:30 most nights too...

We got home last night and I tuned in hoping to watch Celtics around 9 but found that the game was already over..😢

I think there are a LOT of reasons the basketball ratings are in the toilet - the odd game time schedule, the long time off from the seasonal games to the playoffs, the pushed politics, the availability of lots of sports and new activities as lockdowns are almost gone, the months folks learned to live without sports, the continued dropping of all tv packages by folks, etc...yes, the bubble probably also plays a role, but probably WAY less than the other reasons...

But put everything together, and it does look like basketball will have to rethink and readjust some more for the 2020-2021 season...
