I didn't realize they were so rare?

Parents celebrate their 200 million-to-one miracle - identical triplet girls

With their bright blue eyes and cherubic smiles, Gabriella, Alessia and Olivia are a picture of cuteness.

But as well as being adorable, they are also quite extraordinary.

For they are naturally-conceived identical triplets.

Medical experts say the chances of such births are around 200million to one.

Their delighted parents are Richard Rees, 22, and his 23-year-old fiance Carmela Testa, who is a midwife.

She gave birth in January surrounded by colleagues at the maternity unit in Peterborough where she normally works.

The sisters were born seven weeks prematurely via Caesarean section.

They weighed between 3lb 4oz and 3lb 10oz and spent three weeks in an incubator until they were strong enough to go home.

DD has a friend with identical triplet sisters. And they really are IDENTICAL! I have no idea how the mom did it because DD's friend is less than a year younger than the trips! :scared1: So they have a 11yo son, 9yo trips and an 8yo :faint:

They are all great kids too, I think it helps that dad is a police officer! lol

Last week we had this story. Quadruplets which are actually a set of identical triplets, and a single.

Mom gives birth to identical triplets — plus one
Fewer than 100 similar cases of quadruplets are documented in the U.S.

TOWSON, Md. - A mother has given birth to a rare set of quadruplets in which three of the four boys are identical.

The boys were born 11 weeks premature in January at Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Towson. The parents plan to introduce themselves and their boys at a news conference Friday.

There are fewer than 100 documented cases of "identical triplets plus one" in the United States, hospital officials said.

Two embryos were implanted into the mother, and both were fertilized, hospital spokesman Michael Schwartzberg said. One of them split, then split again, creating the identical triplets.

The boys were delivered by Caesarian section Jan. 29, their mother's 32nd birthday. Joshua Drew was born first, then Gavin Michael, Cody Benjamin and finally Logan Christopher, the non-identical one, Schwartzberg said.

The babies were treated at the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, and all four have been home in Belcamp for about 2 1/2 weeks, Schwartzberg said.

That's so funny that you posted this. I was going to come here and ask about this. My friend and I were discussing the Maryland identical triplets + 1 (my friend also has triplets- fraternal). She was telling me that her MIL who is a nurse says that in identical triplets, one is ALWAYS infertile. I coudn't find anything on the net to support that. Does anyone know if this is true? I would hate to think it is.

There's a DIS'r who is an identical triplet... maybe she'll post. :)

Yeah, it's so rare because it means that the egg has to split into three and all parts of the egg fully develop into fetuses. Cute babies!

I worked with one out of a set of idential triplets.

Growing up into their teens, they each dyed their hair, all hating light brown. One is now blonde, one is a red-head, and one now is a chestnut dark brown.

Nicest ladies I've ever met. When I met the first one, it was so weird, as I didn't know she had a twin. Then the third one showed up and I was all "wow, how cool." They gracefully said they often get that response and they agree. They love being triplets.

I have a friend who has natural triplets, but they are twins plus one. Her other child, boy, was only 17 months old when they were born. She's a great Mom!

How could that possibly be true? :confused3 Gee, I don't think so :lmao:

Our former neighbors had identical girls. I knew the girls for 9 years before we moved, and I could NEVER tell them apart! I have seen them a few times since, they are almost 15 now, and still side by side by side they look like clones.

I went to school with a set. They all still live next door to one another, though they are now in their mid-40's and married.

In HS our French teacher never wanted to bother trying to tell them apart (they still dressed alike all the way through school; same haircut, same glasses, too) -- she just called each of them "piece o'girl".

There was actually a second set of natural triplets in my hs class, but they were not identical; one was male.

My sister was best friends with a twin when she was growing up in the early 60's, she was one of 4 sets of multiples in that family, none of them identical. They had 12 children, including two sets of triplets and two sets of twins.

We live just down the road from Twinsburg (Ohio) and, at least once a year, our town is overrun with hundreds of sets of twins and quite a few sets of triplets. Last year a set of identical triplet girls graduated from our high school. The only way to tell the apart was that they each had a different hair style. I got to know them because they worked on the backstage crew for the high school play (although I never did figure out how to assign the correct name to the correct triplet). The three of them graduated in the top 25 of their class (but not with identical rankings). I never realized just how rare it was to meet a set of identical triplets.

Well, it's true in cows. ;)

When twin cows are born (a boy and girl) one of them is always sterile. I can't remember if it's the bull or the heifer, though. :goodvibes

Awwwwwww...........and they have their daddy's hair, too!!
:rotfl:

As far as the Maryland identical triplets plus one, too bad the fraternal baby is the youngest, too. His sibs will never let him forget that. :rotfl2:

The female calf is the sterile one. The testosterone from the bull calf crosses into his sibling and masculinizes her reproductive tract. For any of you Jeopardy junkies, she is called a "Freemartin" ;)
