If using Nationwide their website says that the rate they use is the Visa wholesale rate and then provide the link - thought some might be interested in bookmarking it so here it is:

I've just come back from Canada and paid for our Hotel with Nationwide Credit Card. The exchange rate came through at 2.03 to the £ whereas could only buy it at 1.90 to the £ in UK.....great deal
