National EC free day credit

I am a National EC member and I've finally traveled enough to earn a free day credit.

I know you can't use it with a coupon.

What I would like to know is what happens if,

1. I use it on line for a reservation,
2. I check rates later and the rate is lower.
3. I cancel the first reservation to get the credit back.

My question, does the credit come back immedicately, or do I have to wait some time frame to be able to use the credit on the new ressie.

Or, do I make the new ressie and after the credit gets restored, go back and update the new ressie (I've never had luck trying to update a ressie without it changing the price).

Also, does the free day have an expiration date? I know the points you earn to apply to a free day expire, but not sure about the free day itself.

This is what I do with my free days.
I wait till about 5-7 days before I am traveling (to make sure I have the lowest rate ) then I call National and have them add the free day(s) onto my reservation. I've never done it myself online.
Yes the free days do expire, they can tell you the date when you call them.

You can use these free day coupons immediately online when booking the reservation. Simply enter the coupon ID number and qty you have and discount (free day(s)) show on confirmation page. Very simple and easy.

I just got back Tuesday and rented from National at the Dolphin and returned car to Airport. I put the free day coupon code online and used EA, got a nice Dodge Stratus for a grand total of $53.00 for Sat to Tuesday, a 3 day rental. No problems at all. I have also used the drop down box for the free day. Either works fine.
