Perhaps some of the veterans here will remember what used to happen when you tried to modify a reservation on line with National. Prices went up, pickup locations changed, etc.
Well, it appears they fixed this PITA problem. I just changed dates to extend one day (thank you SWA) and just for fun, I clicked on modify, entered the new data and amazingly enough the base rate stayed the same and the additional day was only like 30.05 with all taxes. I was thrilled!!!!! And, it kept me at Emerald Reserve. I like that this problem was solved.

Alamo on the other hand, jumped the rate to the present level and the cost was WAY more than the original reservation.

Just thought I would share.

The same thing happend to me. A few weeks ago we finally bought our airfare and I had to "modify" our reservation. I figured it would double the price but I had to try anyway. I couldnt belive it when the price didnt go up very much!!!

Oh, there is no putting anything over on you!!!! Yep, got 110.00 out of Hartford. Nothing available on 9/1/03, so I opted for 8/31/03 after finding that National's modification would only cost 30.05 for the extra day, the base stayed the same. So, all in all, the savings net was 80.00. And.....I got an extra day!!!!!

gail....

thanks for clearing it up.....was not sure when you said you added a day and mentioned the "illumination" cruise and then late flight what you were doing......to me add a day would have been on the end....

nice to know National has fixed some of the problems with the website but hope they have not fixed the "glitch" that allows "double dipping" as some at national call it......different contract and coupon codes ....like DC contract and Entertainment code.....mixed...

sure gonna miss the DC discount next year, even though aarp does have some better discounts off the base rate, they do not usually show up for "MCO rentals"

you must be getting excited about how close your trip is.....was there last week on a quickie trip.......stayed at the VWL thursday night....

where are you setting up "home" this time....

I know you answered this question before (sort of) but can I "modify" my reservation to include my Emerald Isle number. I joined after I made the reservation but want it included now so I don't need to pay for my spouse as a second driver. Do you think this can be "modified". I was afraid to do it until your post as everything I have read led me to believe I would lose my rate. (And it IS a great rate!)

Thanks.

I know, I tend to be confusing when I write. :) Only normal people add a day at the end. LOL No fear, you can still double dip and btw, you can at Alamo now. I used Dee's AARP (approx. 10%, and booked in April) discount and a 20.00 coupon from BJ's with this National rental.
BTW, again, Alamo has AARP discounts also, but, you need to call and ask for it.
I am looking forward to this trip, excited, nah, but, I do need a vacation. :)

We will be at OKW, as usual.

How was your quickie?

I don't think you can do this online, but, why not give the member hotline a call and see if you can do it that way.

what is a "great" rate??

Well, for me, 8 days full size all taxes, 192.19. Which is below what it is now for the same car for 7 days.

Gail--this is GREAT news :) I might be switching flights as a result of the SWA sale, and that is one less person I have to speak to, LOL!

By doing this (using the coupon), then you would not get EA service, correct? I currently have a ressie w/National and believe it or not, am not using a coupon because I don't want the hassle of having to go to the counter. I guess once you've done the EA you get spoiled!

Nancy,
That depends on the coupon. If it is an upgrade coupon, then you will be bumped back to counter service. Most others are good to go with EA. EA is now only for Intermediate reservations. Full size goes to Emerald Reserve, and you can use any coupon with that (except upgrade coupons). I am wondering if you might have EA confused with the new Quick Rent, which you cannot use coupons for.
BTW, my reservation is with a discount code and a coupon and I have Emerald Reserve for my car. I tried the EA with the same combo and no problem, except I don't feel like gambling for a full size car. :)

The flights on SWA are pretty good, aren't they? :)
The only caution I can give you is make sure your READ the modification before you accept it. The beauty of this is they put both the old and the modified reservation side by side so you can compare. If you don't like the modified one (just in case National goes back to it's evil ways :) ) you don't have to accept it.

One time I did do the modification and did not read it completely, and I got bumped back to counter. I called them and they switched it back to Emerald reserve with no problems. They are really nice about this stuff. :)

Gail...

Double checked reservation and I do have Emerald Reserve (why did they have to start adding a new vocabulary?!); I do understand the difference in EA being the intermediate class.

Basically, I guess I still use "EA" interchangeably to mean "bypass counter". I have the entertainment book coupons, for $15 off weekly rental. Do you think I could try to "modify" that original reservation (using the process you described in your original post) by adding the coupon in ? Or would that screw it up? If I try a new reservation, I can't get the original rate that I secured back in April.

Thanks as always!

I thought you might be using EA interchangebly, but, wanted to make sure.
It looks like you can enter a coupon after the fact and codes too!!!
Give it a try, remember, you don't have to accept the modification, it does let you back out. Let me know how you do.
