Nasty!

I think every smoker knows people are side eyeing them every time they light up.

It's the vitriol the OP came out with. I'm not taken aback by a lot, but even I was a bit shocked by the nastiness. I'd stand around 10 smokers before being around someone with the OPs attitude any day of the week.

"Vitriol"? Really?

Uh, yeah. What would you call it? Unless you put it in quotes because you don't know what it means?

I would call it a simple statement of something I find nasty.

Smokers can smoke all they want. I don't really care (except that it affects all of our health insurance costs). I just don't want to smell it.

Yeah. Ok. It's the way that you've stated your opinion that makes it your favorite word - Nasty!

I promise you, I am not considering smokers Lepers. But I do think if your addiction makes your child smell every. single. day. of their life, you are most likely going to be judged. And, of course, smoking is more dangerous than making your child stink. You are hurting them too.
This is one of the issues that my Wife and I had to deal with when our Daughter was growing up.
The parents of one of her friends told her that her Mom and Dad were "bad people" because they smoked.
My dislike of self righteous statements like that can't be expressed in polite language.
Our Daughter, who never took up the smoking addiction, now tells us that she has learned that good people can have bad habits, or addictions, and it's not good decorum to judge them based on your personal likes and dislikes.

Liberal-minded? What do you mean? I would think someone who is liberal-minded would accept more. If you mean politically liberal, you'd better not go there.
I intended it as a social comment, not a political one. :D

I would never tell my child that their friend's parents are bad because they smoke.

Although, as an adult, I do think that people who smoke in the home where children live (or in the car where children are) should be educated on how they are making their children smell (or worse).

I get annoyed with the smell. But having started my work life when smokers were still allowed to leave cigarettes burning in an ash try on their desk, I learned to pick my battles. Now that I'm older and have been diagnosed with asthma, I'm more sensitive to it than ever. But dang, I still remember how awful it was to work near someone smoking at their desk. Thank heaven for all the zealots who helped put an end to that!

Yep. The guy across from me would use one cigarette to light up the next...all day long! I also remember how the ceiling tiles above smokers' desks were all yellowed...

As an adult, they know.

Thankfully, I think smoking is becoming a thing of the past. It isn't popular anymore to kids.

...I just don't want to smell it.

What about keeping a handkerchief spritzed with a smell you like in your pocket?

I know some great people who started smoking before we all knew how bad it can be for you. Even though we know better now, I try to be nice to them anyway.

popcorn::I am literally crying at this post!!!! You guys have some seriously funny responses!!!!! I'm not sure if its lack of sleep from stalking the free dining post or what but I'm crying!!!!

That must vary regionally. I drive my daughter to high school every morning and all sorts of kids are huddled across the street having one last smoke before heading in.

Maybe. Or maybe just the kids I'm around.

I think just in general though, the fewer adults who smoke because it's so unwelcome everywhere will just in turn lead to fewer smoking kids.

Oh for the love of God. Wrap yourself in bubble wrap it will serve two-fold..prevent smells from permeating your delicate nasal passages and as cushion in case you fall off your high horse. Good luck with life :rotfl:

Yeahhhhh, smokers don't do stairs.

I smoke cigars (smoking one now in fact) and usually take the stairs!

I'm going to take the stairs here soon from my deck to the patio to get into the hot tub. :)

Fewer people smoke because it's so welcomed? I thought less people smoke because it kills you. Hopefully way less kids are smoking.

Kids still started smoking knowing it's bad for you because it's the cool thing to do. I did. My friends did. The facts didn't matter. But you could smoke anywhere.

Now you can't. It's not cool anymore. It's not cool to go outside and leave the group for a smoke. It's not cool to hold up the group.

Since when did teenagers cares about the logic of smoking?

Here it's extremely uncommon to see a teen smoking - uncool, totally uncool :smokin:. My DS (now 19) absolutely loathed the fact that DH and I smoked, smoking is the last thing he would ever do. I don't know one single teenager that smokes and off the top of my head can only think of 2 twentysomethings. They're both women - I wonder if that's statistically significant in any way? Even back in my day I think more girls than boys smoked.

I do not smoke but ya know what I would rather live surrounded with Cigarette smoke
Than spend 10 minutes with those people with that NASTY self-righteous attitude.
Oh and yes a child being raised by smokers is so much worse then child that lives with abusers.
because a little smokey smell is so much worse then broken bones and spirits.

I'm not going to argue, but its alot more than just a "little smokey smell". Here's a link you might find informative.
