Nasty Jacuzzi?

We were lucky enough to stay at Kidani last week. We stayed in a 1 bedroom, sav. view. I put my DD6 in the jacuzzi and let her splash around for about an hour. So, the next morning I get out of the shower and notice some disgusting neon green stuff on the bottom and sides of the jacuzzi. So, I speak with customer service manager and he sends up housekeeping manager (actually two managers) they state "We have never seen this before, not sure what it could be? Maybe a chemical we use to clean it?" So, she says we will clean it to today. I didn't want it to ruin my trip so I said fine, whatever I'm going to MK. Not like I was going to put DD in it again. But, the more my husband and I talk about it he thinks we should have spoken with a manager again. After all, my DD swimming around in chemicals is a bit concerning, any thoughts?

It seems odd that the tub, the morning after being filled with water would have a cleaning chemical residue in a concentration high enough to actually have a neon green color evident. Were the jets turned on while your daughter was in the tub? Is it possible that something was spilled in the tub between the time the water was drained and when you saw it the next morning, like shampoo or conditioner, or maybe even cologne?

I'm not saying it wasn't possible that it was a chemical residue, just odd, after it was filled with water and drained.

So, not sure why she thought it would be a chemical. We did use a capful of the Disney Shower Gel in the tub but that was light blue.

There was something kinda gross at BLT... like you fill the tub and it looks normal, but after turning the jets on, a yellow ring appears around the tub.

I wonder if maybe the color (not the grit) came from the shower gel. I have an old bottle from a previous trip and it turned a funky green with age...maybe it interacted with the chlorine in the water

Grit sound like either fine sand, which would be next to impossible to fully flush from the system, or maybe a cleaning agent, like a soft-scrub type cleanser.

The only time we use the jacuzzi is when we have our 8 year old grandson with us.......he likes to use it. However, before I will allow him to get in I clean it very well with about a cup of bleach and a tablespoon or so of dishwasher powder. I just fill it and run the jets for about 10 to 15 minutes to let the bleach and powder cycle thru. Then I rinse well by running clean water thru the cycle. It's amazing the stuff that comes from those jets when cleaned this way. All sorts of gunk. We have a hot tub at home and our repairman once told me to do this whenever using a hotel jacuzzi. He said if you don't it's pretty much like taking a bath with people who stayed in the room before you since water from previous bathers lays in the tubing of the jets since you can't really drain it all the way without blowing air thru the tubing and it really needs to be sanitized with bleach to be truly clean. So, when I know the jacuzzi will be used during our stay I always pick up a small bottle of Clorox on our grocery run or if ordering from Garden Grocer I make sure I add it to my order.

I have jacuzzi at home and this is usually from hard water -
I do the bleach thing for sure once a week to make sure nothing yucky builds up in the jets -
I am remolding soon and will get the air tub instead -
I will have to remember to get the mini Clorox for our 1st trip in March -

If the tub had never had the jets turned on since it was installed, some manufacturers use dyed water to check for leaks prior to shipping. Did the green only appear the next day or during use also?

When reading this thread I kept thinking about the times I've accidentally blocked the detergent cups with a pan and it doesn't open and dump the detergent. Depending on the brand I've used the detergent can look green and feel gritty. Is it possible someone had cleaned the tub using dishwasher detergent but did not clear the jets with clean water?

The dishwasher powder is important as it has degreasers to break up the fats and oil deposits in the pipes that come from bodies. It's important to use water as hot as possible too, as it helps loosen up those grease deposits.
And I use 3 cups of bleach as it takes alot of water to get the level to cover the jets.

I'll have to admit, after my neighbor told me that 6 years ago, there have only been 4 times I've gotten into a jetted tub - after cleaning it out!

The same could be said of any swimming pool. Doesn't stop me from enjoying them.

And, just think, most of our drinkng water comes from rivers, lakes or streams where people boat, swim and fish.

I know all that you mentioned of course..... but he has a point about hot tubs- the water being hot and a breeding ground for bacteria if the proper chemical levels aren't maintained.

I just always make sure I take a good long shower after I get out of a hot tub!

You can't safely carry bleach onboard a plane..... packets of dishwashing powder would be doable.

Any DVC Room with a jacuzzi should have a dishwasher, and that detergent is provided. I don't know if they sell chlorine bleach at the resort store.
